you always gotta check with these old timers if they're talking UK or US gallons...
glad to hear the trip is going smoothly!
Yep, that particular old timer tends to use UK gallons even when he's in the 'states. If Craig got 40 USMPG I'm REALLY impressed, even more so than with Ian's 34. Roberta's 850 averages about 27-28 on the highway
Just to keep things straight - the combined total (individual legs of the trip do vary) is 95l for 1175km, which is 12.36l/100km or 29MPG US, or 35MPG UK. I'm happy with anything over 25MPG US. My previous calculation was completely hooped as my speedometer is not correct any longer and I was: A. speeding like crazy and B. had no idea how far I'd gone.
Now, the angle drive on my speedo crapped out in my garage (had worked the day before) and I didn't have a speedo on my way out and was driving about 120 - 125 km/h. We then settled that down once Dale was out in front and setting the pace - the mileage was better. At 55 mph, I'm turning about 2400 rpm, so different from driving with the M40.
The thermal switch died along the way and we rigged up a ghetto switch in Portland BEFORE we hit the traffic. No reason it should have died - but the parts guy also couldn't find the right on/off temps in his catalogue for my application. I've got a 180 degree t-stat and need to have the fan come on at say 190-195 then off at 185 something like that. The old switch was 175 off 185 on, so with the sensor in the head the fan was always on!
No other real issues - other than it is still pinging on high test with only 5 degrees BTDC of base timing. I really need to get the distributor recurved in the worst way. The timing comes on too fast and is killing me at 2500 rpm - where I need it the most it is too far advanced. Maybe I can find some stiffer springs.
Anyway - I scored a new bumper center section and a mint cowl vent cover at the swap meet - one vendor thinks he's got an angle drive in a box of parts somewhere. He left me his number on his add sheet for the 122 wagon he's selling (with M41) running, drivable for $900
I had to walk away.
Lots of fun.
