Vic,

I'm going to be calling on you to help me with doing the swap on my tranny. Give me a call if you need some help with your swap - maybe I can come over and help for a while. Home/office - 270-7319, cell 701-7319

Have you seen this web page ?

Also helpful to go through the various posts on this thread here:

Hope this info is of some use to you.

Roj

thanks Roj...yeah i have read pretty much everything on the net about the m46 conversion...the problems i was running into were things, you guessed it, no one had written about

all went well tonight...sorta

hammered on sockets on the bolts i couldnt get unstuck...suprised i didnt damage my sockets more but they seem okay...used the breaker bar and some choice words and it helped to get those bolts out...

it's all learn as you go right? thanks to Dale and Matt, once again, for steering me in the right direction, picture me sitting there...why the hell is this tranny not coming out??? hmm hmm

Quote:
Hi Dale...why isn't my tranny dropping?

you undo the torque converter bolts?

no...there's torque converter bolts...oh these things...dammit

yeah you gotta do that

ok thanks

about 10 mins passes

Hey Vik

Hey Matt, how do i get the torque converter bolts out?

they're fun eh?

not really...

so Matt here is what i did, dug into my dad's old stash of tools, found a GRAY wrench...11/16", and had some fun...

this worked with 3 out of the 4 bolts, then i rounded two corners off the 4th, so i went to Rick Sr' stash and borrowed a 17mm and then the 4th came out

and tada!

Image

yay slushbox out of the car!...

side note: Dale this was the piece i was speaking of...anyone know what this is called? AND do i need it for the m46?

Image

tom i am going to remove the pedal box and clean a lil bit underneath the car...do that oil return line again...and possibly the rear main seal

ciao

that piece covers the bottom of the flywheel and attaches to the block, technically you do not need it but if you dont want stuff and small children/animals to get stuck then it should go on.

It also provides some support for the bellhousing, and strengthens the whole assembly. That piece is actually structural.

Do the rear main seal. You have it apart, do it.

The pedal box is pretty simple to come out, you might need a universal for your socket though. Some of the bolts are annoying, but seriously, way simpler than a 240 as you can actually see the bolts.

Looks liek you have all the parts you need for a swap. thats the first step. WShen you start getting it further apart, you'll see more of where things go.

Ya you need that thing on the bottom of the bellhousing.... Just slap her back in. Once you get the bolts loose, they will be forever loose. So you are set.

More questions, just email me with pictures and I'll explain

thanks jordan!

i have the rear main seal out, and the old one was in pretty poor shape, but i am having much difficulty getting the new one in that bracket type piece...any tips? or do you just use the "special tool"

pedal box is done, hardest part was getting that damn brake pedal spring to go where i wanted it too...clutch master is also installed....

tranny cooler/lines/everything to do with the auto is out of the car...

installed the CBV from Athal, and the old one, i took it apart and the diaphragm had three large holes in it...so i assume that's the leak...we shall see!

ciao

Good luck.

I take that entire housing out of the car when I do those seals. I then tap the seal in with a hammer and a block of wood.
Then to get it back into the car (You need a new gaset for it, you can make it out of that paper gasket maker stuff if need be). I use feeler gauges, teh thin ones to go between the gasket and the end of the crank, with a little grease on the gasket, and it slides on over.

But don't take my word for it, my car does leak an awful amount of oil power steering fluid and tranny fluid, oh can't forget the rear diff oil also... ;)

cool thanks again jordan!

umm question though, since you work at a dealership you might know/be able to look up...from iPD's website, there clutch kits

760 1984 B23FT M46 4 spd w/ OD WS4K1020 $348.00

700 turbo 1985-91 B230F M46 4 spd w/ OD WS4K1009 $278.00

now the first mistake is that the 700 turbo engine is not a B230F :P

but the kits are different, i just posted a question to iPD about them, but anyone here know?

i doubt tyler pulled this tranny off of an 84 760, so now i am worried that my clutch assembly will not work...and i will have to spend the dough to get a new, well...everything

ciao[/b]

Well for one, the b23FT NEVER came with a manual transmission, so I'm not sure what the deal is there. Most/all 1984 M46's had the smaller flywheel so the clutches should be cheaper, otherwise, it's a 9" clutch for the stepped pressure plate.

what pressure plate do you have, and what clutch do you have? You can tell very quickly if they're going to match...

I've got a brand new Volvo pressure plate and clutch disc for a non-stepped flywheel. The part number matches the 240 intercooler... It'll fit if you run a flat flywheel, won't it? There are probably a few of those kicking around too...

Get your clutch kit from FCP Groton. They only want $198 USD for a Turbo (9") Sachs clutch kit. Shipping by USPS is only about $26.

Come to think of it I want to order a clutch kit from them too. Want to combine our orders and save a little bit on the shipping ?
