Had a chuckle as I was working on the Volvord this week:

Changing mixture:
Old School -
- disassemble carb,
- remove power valve,
- calculate and drill PVCR's (Power Valve Channel Restrictions) from 0.0502" to 0.0515".
- Remove #65 main jets and install #64
- install power valve and reassemble carb

Technology:
- plug in laptop and change mixture map

Change ignition curve
Old School
- remove distributor cap and rotor
- determine start of advance and RPM for maximum advance
- calculate appropriate advance spring and total advance bushing
- install springs & bushing in distributor
- reassemble distributor, install timing light and check

Technology
- plug in laptop and change timing map

Now do you see why I have so much fun

Depends for me sometimes.

Old school for me:
Write haas G&M code and use the haas controller.

New school:
Draft up part and have catia generate the code for me.

Somtimes it isn't obvious which is better. Today I engraved a mercedes gullwing into a clock. Doing that with manual coding and being limited to file size would be a biatch.

Such said, I really don't need any graphical or other heavy computing to cut an basic outside profile, chamfers or whatever, so I just write some code.

To get my 240 running, the k-jets aren't wholly bad. Needs power for the CPR and wire off the starter for the thermo-time/cold start valve cluster fsck.

You have more freedom when walking away from what the factory gave you, but sometimes having the antiquated cold start junk of k-jet or a carb is really fine. You adjust the choke a little or whatever and the car gets you where you need to go. When you have the freedom to define all that for yourself, you have freedom yes, but how do you know you have the time or desire to adjust all of that stuff when you just want it to work.

I hate wiring with a passion. I don't have a good vision for what makes a good setup to put together and take apart. Servicing is a big deal to me, so it irritates me. Thus, old school, antiquated as it may be, makes logical sense sometimes for me. When you set up a carb, you can often follow a very step by step procedure to make the car run nicely. You can do that with EFI too, but the computer will always do just exactly what you tell it, and you have to know what you are telling it really means to develop a logical procedure.

Good choice: you can make money with tools.

Pro_Star (what's your name, anyway): Please don't type jiggawatts, 'cause I see "jiggle-watts", just like I sometimes glance at the screen and see "Pron_Star" as your username. I may be one of the old guys around here, but I'm not so old that I can't be juvenile.

Besides, it's spelled Gigawatts.

spelling before the hour of noon is not one of my strong points, I admit. And it's sad, I've had the nick "pro_star" since I was...oh 16 or 17...as a sarcastic comment towards my awesomeness at everything...and how many people think it's p*rn star is insane. DYSLEXICS OF THE WORLD UNTIE!
(psst and I said it in the other thread, but that was maybe two seconds ago, so i'll be nice n put it here too. My name's Kat)

You'll have to excuse Matt. He's the newest dad on the board, so his wife may still be "off limits". So he comes by his pervy-ness honestly.
