Hi y'all,

On Monday I took the "new" 744 Ti that we bought from Geoff in for it's out-of-province inspection. It failed. Turns out they didn't like Geoff's modified exhaust system which is pretty much a straight pipe and a Thrush muffler. No cat, no resonators. It's not that it's too loud or anything (it's actually not that loud at all), they say it has to be similar to stock and MUST have a catalytic converter.

I priced out a replacement system including a cat and it's very expensive. We don't want a new exhaust system, we like the system that's in there already. We just have to get the car through the damn inspection.

My plan was to go down to PnP and pull the exhaust system out of the 740 that's there, bolt it into my 740, get through the inspection, take that system back out, put the modified system back in and take the PnP system back for a refund.

Well just after noon today I borrowed my neighbour's truck and drove all the way down to PnP. I lugged one of those big carts all the way out to the import section and guess what ? They CRUSHED the friggin' thing earlier this morning !!! #-o What's worse is there wasn't another 740 in the entire yard. ](*,) Aaaarrrrghhh !

So now I'm kinda stuck. What I'm wondering is if there's some kind soul out there that would let me "borrow" their stock 740 sedan exhaust system for a few hours so I can get our car through the damn inspection. What I would do is unbolt your system at the flange just ahead of the catalytic converter and take everything out behind that as one piece. I'd then slam it into the red 740, take it over to the inspection place so the guy could take a quick look at it and pass it. I'd then head right back to your place, replace your system, reinstall mine and get the f*** out of there.

Can anybody help ? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaase ? :prayer:

Please PM me or call me at 270-7319 if you can help me out.

TIA,

Roger

Roger.. I'm sorry to hear that!

I do have the stock cat off that car.. but I'm pretty confident it's clogged bad. I will send it to you though if you want to get someone to weld it in place.. the only bad part is you'll really want to switch it out again.

That's ok Geoff. They also want to see it stock like with resonators and all that stuff as well. Figgers that would happen when I took it to a Midas Muffler shop for the inspection. Gee, no conflict of interest there, eh ? :-k

Try Magnum automotive for the OOP inspection. Then again, Midas will probably pass it for free once they see a stock exhaust, and you'll have to pay Magnum for an inspection from scratch, without guarantee that they'll pass it (though I know they're very lax).

I don't have a stock exhaust to offer, though. Mine rusted off and I built a 3" system of my own.

We use Magnum for all our inspections and work- great guys down there.

Rog, I still have the stock cat-back exhaust from my 940. I think it's only 2" which is why I ditched it, it's still in great shape. You're welcome to it, otherwise, I'll probably take it to the dump as it's just taking up space in my garage and who the hell wants a 2" exhaust anyway...

Chris Morrison thought he had a catalytic converter in a pile of scrap beside his garage but it turns out it's not there. Does anyone else have one they don't need or aren't using and can loan me for a few days ?

Hey... wait a minute. Do the 86+ 240s use the same catalytic converters they use in the 740s ? If so, there's an '86 or '87 245 down at PnP. I could maybe snag the cat off that if it's not in too bad shape...

Maybe I'm wrong...

I'll have to call them and ask.

Failing that there's always the re-volv store in Saskatoon.

If anyone spots a new 740 at PnP PLEASE PM me as soon as you can.

Thanks

Most all JYs around here plaz (plasma cut) them out for the platinum scrap.

If I had to, I'd just get a new one or have someone else do the inspection. Spending hours pulling some rusty grimy POS from the JY that will be at best a biatch to unbolt and bolt in and at worse be a patchwork of leaky/rusty welds 10 hours later sounds absolutely miserable, and even at like $10-20 an hour, it just isn't worth my time and fuss when I can get one wholesale for like $40-65, or an ebay high-flow magnaflow for about $60.

I called PnP today and they said they leave most of the cats on the cars and sell 'em for $60 each. I assume though that they might take certain ones that they know will get good money from the reclaimers but I'm not 100% sure of that. The guy I talked to at Schramm's said they get as much as $160 for some O.E.M. cats so I would expect PnP would snag those.

I called around today and found I could get a 2.5" generic Magnaflow unit for only $77 at PPC so I swung around there and picked one up. I'll need some reducer pieces so I can adapt it to the smaller system that's on the car but with that and the resonator and muffler I got from Athal I should be able to cobble something together that will be good enough to get me through the inspection. Afterwards, I'll take out the muffler & resonator and go back to the system that Geoff put in there except I'll leave the cat in place to clean up the emissions a little.
