So our "new" spiffy red '89 744Ti comes with two OEM keys: a master key that opens and works everything and a valet key that will do everything but unlock the trunk. The thinking behind the valet key was that you could use that key to give to a valet or repair shop and they couldn't get in and open the trunk and possibly steal something of value that you might have locked in there. Sounds good in theory. The thing is the car has power locks and the trunk unlocks automatically when you open the doors so you can unlock the trunk with the valet key almost as easily as you can with the master key. All it is is a less useful master key

I wonder who was the mastermind that came up with that great idea ? It's just silly really and I find it kind of funny.

Anybody else come up with paradoxes and silly things like that with their cars or other things you own ? Why don't we make this thread for sharing stories like that. Might be good for a laugh or two.

If I remember correctly, you can take your master key and turn your trunk lock so it doesn't open when the other doors unlock.

Also, does the valet key open the glove box? I doubt it.

'tis true, you can use the master to "perma" lock your trunk, and the valet key doesn't work with the glove compartment either.

Either way, I think the whole valet/master key thing is super gay.

I can copy keys now btw, w00t. Im gonna go copy random keys now.

Uhhh...legally?

I've got about 75 Volvo 2/7 key blanks. I know I can use extra keys for all my cars...

Dale have you got 7 series master key blanks ? Would like to buy some off you if you have some spares you don't mind letting go of. We called around a bunch of places and they only had the friggin' valet key blanks.

I've got two types. I'm pretty sure one is the master blank...they have big plastic heads on them...

You guys and your fancy keys...the Canuck will start with two completely different keys on my key chain. In fact I think I could turn it over with a screwdriver without any trouble. I've got a different locks on the doors and ignition, try to figure that out Mr Valet.

haha I just remember our last snafu at carling...trying to get a second key for the volvo (for some reason when we got her, we only got her with the one master key....I'll just assume that theres an extra key floating around ontario somewhere that the previous owner was a tool and lost)

yeah....key made at the volvo dealership...buggers charged us 300 bucks for it too...

only worked about 25% of the time. I remember picking up the key, using it to drive home, went to go to work the next day (with the same recently made key) and it wouldnt work.

Needless to say it got taken back.

On the bright side, the key and the clicker from Valentine work :) :) :)
