I posted this over on T'bricks and Dale told me about this site, which I forgot about.

Anyways I'm driving out here the first of June and I have been looking for place to rent from. I have found a few but I am just trying to wait a bit to see if and where I am going to get a job lined up at. And I'm hoping a few other volvo nuts would be able to help me put so I won't end up in a bad part of the city... if there is a bad area?

My Instructor at school has a contact at the Lafrage in the Exshaw Cement Plant. That is the the only promising job that I have heard good things about. Pratt & Whitney where going to come to the school to look for workers but they have yet to come.

So if anyone has anything that would help me out that would be great.

Neil

Hi Neil and welcome to Calgary, where are you moving from?

Sorry I cannot help you with accomodations, my oldest just moved out and we are enjoying a much quieter and less costly life right now :? but on the job front what is your education in and what do YOU want to do. There are jobs in Calgary, although the media would have you believe that you can get $60,000 if you have a pulse-wrong. Emplyers are looking for skills and the "right fit".

We can all see what we can do about the jobs, just give us an idea what you are skilled, educated and good at doing.

I am moving from Halifax and driving out by myself.

I have been to Alberta the past two summers. This first I was working the oilrigs in Edson. And last summer I was building ICF foundations just outside of Red Deer in Pine Lake and outside of Stony Plain.

For education I am just finishing my mechanical engineering technologist degree. I have done a lot of work with AutoCad as well as Inventor. I am also taken part in the Canada skills competition for Cad. If I win here in Nova Scotia the nationals are in Calgary this year, so if I make it there I would hope to find some employers that way.

As for skills… I can do/try anything with my hands as far as trades go. I am a really quick learner. I have also done a bit of welding back here at my job. I have no tickets though.

I will warn you this for your drive out - if you see random hay bales at the side of the road while driving through Saskatchewan, slow down. Chances are, theres a cop behind em with a speed gun.

So far as housing goes, theres a couple of websites that may give you an idea... www.rentspot.com and I think theres a www.rentfaster.com or something like that.

But then I just noticed you may have a couple places you're looking at already...so I'll just hush. lol.

Exshaw cement plant? that's a bit of a commute from calgary...could be done. Check out www.calgaryjobshop.com and see if any catch your eye.

For jobs in Calgary check the job boards listed as well as www.monster.ca and www.workopolis.com.

With your education contact these companies for opportunities:
Jacobs Engineering
SNC Lavalin
Colt Engineering
Fluor Canada
Graham Canada
Schlumberger
PCL

That should give you a place to start

You shouldn't have any problem getting into a good company doing autocad for them, then work your way up in the engineering department. You've got co-op experience in both the housing and oil industries, so that should really help open a door or two.

Jacobs isn't too bad of a company but they have changed a lot in the last couple years in the management areas and are starting to lose focus and direction.

Colt isn't a bad company to work for, i've heard some decent things about them but there are better choices

I would look at Fluor first on the list, they have contracts with a bunch of the big oil companies and just keep growing.

Nothing with any concrete dates yet - keep your eyes peeled though, we do have them.

We've also been known to have the occasional wing night to just get together and shoot the shit.

I did some IT contract work for Jacobs, they seemed nice?

The pay sure was good. Yea, LOTS of CAD here in Calgary, you can make decent money being a draughtsman of any kind.
