Ok, I have a line on a used 2 post car hoist. Its a 9000lbs chain overhead model. Obviously I wont be lifting 9000lbs with it though!

Anyone have an idea what its worth? I just dont want to get hosed.

Ohh and anyone have an idea how think my garage concrete pad should be to have 4000lbs on the hoist?

I know John Lane had a 2-post hoist nearly collapse so poured 24" thick blocks under each post to anchor it...

The guy was in today putting my new hoist in today and The bolts that anchor them in to the concrete are about 6 inches long.

Also keep in mind that you need around 11 feet of ceiling for a hoist

I have 9.5 feet, and the model i'm looking at is about 9 ft

Dale, how think was his floor when it just about fell?

I'm not sure how thick but he pointed out the significant size of the pad of 24" thick stuff. I suspect it was 6 or 8 inches anyways...

Ohh well, I can buy some more parts now! :D

i think the standard thickness is 8 inches, quick way to tell is to dig a hole beside your garage, and see how far down your concrete goes.

You can always dig out a chunk of the floor and pour a deeper slab under the hoist. Should be that difficult to do. That way you can lay an anchor plate and threaded rod up through the slab...

Ya I thought about that but for the amount work to how much I will use it I think I will just pass.
In a couple years when I move to some land with some space I will build a dedicated shop and get a hoist, until then I guess the floorjack will work.

seems kinda like overkill if you ask me for an anchor plate. Just need the right mix of concrete.

six inches of concrete was my quote when i wanted to replace a hoist,
i had 5 inches and alberta sales said, unless it's six they won't install it.
so i just fixed it.
3000.00 to pour another block of concrete and 30 day down time before i can raise a car.
do the math.
everybody covers their arses these days.
but it is funny they have concrete people on call next day service.to chop cut and fill.

A guy at work had a pad poured for his garage, it doesn't have a hoist or anything, he had 2 quotes. One was for a 4" pad, and the other was a 5" pad.

At work, when I get my hoist worked on, the bolts are atleast 6" long. Its a 2 post hoist, that comes up out of the ground, no support up above the ground, just two cylinders straight up with my arms attached.

But it also goes what, 9 feet down?

The hoist is 6 feet high fully raised.

My father in law has a hoist in his mansion. His pad is 5" thick ( he just had it repaired this past summer). It is a 4 post hoist though. so more spread out. And he only picks up a honda Prelude with it. He doesn't use it for any work, just to store Cassies brothers car when he is home from University of Alberta.
