I was just thinking they other day about replacing my sparkplug wires and was wondering if its doable as a DIY project? I heard that a couple ppl in the group used to make them (dale or matt??) and i was wondering how u guys made them. Im not to sure about what kinda wire should be used, is it possible to say use stereo wire(like for running amplifier power lines) or is that tres ghetto. Im kinda itchin to do some DIY projects and making high performance spark plug wires seems kinda cool! any ideas?????

Thanks

Jon

Ian Rankin in Edmonton used to work at Best Buy Performance, not to be confused with Best Buy Electronics (which ironically would have that stereo power wire you're looking for) and he got MSD ignition wire & ends for a bit cheaper than you or I got 'em for.

You can't use normal wire for this. Wow, you REALLY can't use normal wire for this!

I always make my wire custom. I just hate the fit of pre-made wires.
you cannot use sterio wire, no chance the "spark" will be contained.

The biggest problem with making the wires for Volvo is the unique ends they use in the distributor cap, I have yet to find a source for these ends so you end up having to reuse the ends.

Ditch those crappy OEM Beru ends & use the acorn connectors.

Depending on your cap. They would not work on my old 700 with the large head mounted distributor

I assume Jon's working on his GT, which will have the classic style coil/dizzy ends. Even so, Matt Eakin found success by pinching the coil/dizzy plugs so they worked with the center-post style terminals.

You can get everything you need to make your own DIY MSD spark plug wires at Best Buy Performance (2211 Centre Street NW). You can buy 25' rolls of the red MSD wire and all the boots and stuff you need to make your own custom spark plug wires. I've made a set for both my boats and have all the stuff to make a set for my 1800 and 940.

P.S. If you want a good deal on K&N air filters that Best Buy place has really, really good prices on 'em. They don't carry much there for Volvos specifically so you'll probably have to order your filters in. Nonetheless, their prices are so good it's worth the wait. I got a K&N for my 240 from them and it came in at about half of what Crappy Tire charges for them.

Can't remember exactly. The filter for my 240 was about half of what Crappy Tire wanted for the same thing. I think 30 or 40 something bux at Best Buy vs 80 or 90 something bux at CT for the filter. I've also special ordered some K&Ns for my 1800 from there too.

If I recall correctly you could buy all the stuff you needed to make up about 4 or 5 sets of MSD spark plug wires like what Dale and some others have in their cars (Ian Rankin made them up) for about $100 give or take a bit. Best thing to do is to call 'em and find out. They're in the book.
