Much better argument Raz, but do not blame the dealerships for the price of parts. They HAVE TO obtain all their parts through the manufacturers regional distribution system ... kind of like the old ALCB for booze. The prices they are charge for parts is set by the manufacturer, not the dealership. Trust me they are as frustrated by some of the pricing as much or more that the consumer.

An example is the brake upgrade for my Olds Intrigue, through the dealer it is $700, but I can get it through GM Performance in the US for $350. This price is $250 less than the dealer cost, but they are not allowed to go directly to GM Performance, they have to go through the Regional distribution system or risk loosing their dealership. So they have to play the system. Blame the unions for high wages, blame the manufacturers for greed, the dealers are often caught in the middle.

As for salesmen, yes agreed many will do anything for a sale. Realize that most dealerships make twice as much profit on used cars over new car sales. This is not an excuse for high pressure sales tactics but the business is a rough one. Tyler can attest to how much his hands are tied and how frustrating it is from just a Service Writer perspective.

I work at a dealership.... I started apprenticing earlier this week (movin' up in the world from a lot boy)...

But I spent alot of time in parts, and the dealership is very open. Dealerships don't get to set thier prices on parts. They get the price right from Volvo then the dealership adds thier 35% on or whatever the respective dealers % is.

Now the killer part. Is each dealership is Volume based. The more parts they move and the more they keep in stock, they get WAY cheaper parts from Volvo. So you need to be at a dealer that moves a crap load to get a serious discount. I get cost +5%... Which is still hella awsome, I'm never going to complain about 6 dollar oil filters compared to the 12 I paid in Kamloops.

Tyler, I would hate your job. The writers at work take a beating from the customers AND the techs. But maybe our Service writers are just a little "not there"....

Vote for new topic for valentine garage sale meet, early may isn't it?

Oh, and on the "other" topic. I had a girlfriend back in college who went to australia and all she brought me back were some crappy scabies. (She was first gen canadian, parents from australia, ironically enough).
