Does anyone know how to check the alternator/regulator compatability? The bearings on my 35 amp alternator are too worn to fix but I have a spare 55A.
13038 12V 55A. I don't know what it came off of, it came with the car. The alternator bodies are identical.

Hi Ian,

That alternator came from either a late 140 series of a 1975 240. Essentially, all FI cars got the 55 A alternator. They need an external regulator and they are all the same as far as I know.

Check it out from the usual suppliers - though I was able to source one through World Pac from Calgary...in other words, go to Auto Value or Napa and they can get you one in a couple of days and save the shipping.

Craig

Thanks Craig. After I posted I went down to Hagen and they said both alts used the same reg. My plan now is to put in the 55A and upgrade the wire. Sound ok or am I missing something?

Done. I think the problem on the cruise was just the regulator connection. Dirt and rust. Cleaned the grounds anyway and changed a few terminals. Getting 14 now. Who's up for a drive?

Now you're cooking. That looks like it should do the trick. Stainless screws, I hope?
