AFAIK

...it broke the record for price, the most expensive production station wagon, at just under $10000 USD, MSRP.

So think back in '76...what could $10000 get you?

with inflation today it would be worth approx. $36,340

Probably the 850...

The Mercedes 300TD would've blown away the 265 in the price cetegory but may not have been on the scene in '76...

Hmmm...probably the 300 series although there was that ugly Volvo/Renault cross that might've been fwd... All European though...
