Yes...it was me that bought that white GLT at PYP on the weekend. Actually, Ian bought it but only on a technicality...
It's an '81 B23E M46 GLT complete with full gauge package, 230K and a very tight sounding engine and, get this, one of those goofy silver interiors. It's got a very solid body, having spent much of its life in Lethbridge or Medicine Hat. The paint isn't the greatest but it's new. It was originally a silver car and someone splashed a $49 Maaco paintjob on it. A little ugly bodywork on the driver's front fender too but that will be replaced right away with another.
After driving it home, I know why it was there but it's not something that can't be corrected with a few hours of twisting wrenches. The whole front end needs to be replaced. Struts, ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings, rack. You name it, it's getting replaced. It's downright dangerous to drive as it is.
"How do they do that" you ask? Well, the perfect donor car is sitting in the driveway. No, not the blue 245 that I'm supposed to be selling. How about the silver 245? Yup. Time to pension the old girl off and make use of some of the good parts. It's got a great suspension. Unknown struts in the front that are still great. Koni's in the rear. Poly bushings in the front as well as the torque rods and panhard rod. The trailing arms will get them too. The 245 has a 25/25 swaybar combo on it that will likely find its way to the 242. The 245 has a rebuilt rack and relatively new tie rod ends and ball joints. Essentially the entire front subframe will be swapped over to the 242. The 245 has good GT seats and a nice R-Sport wheel. The stereo will come too, along with floor mats and a few other goodies.
Now...you all know I'm not terrible satisfied with a "stock" car so "what else is he going to do", you ask? Well...
Need I say more?
Yes...I've got the Group A spoiler and the flat hood. I'll get a grill from somewhere, or make one. The wheels wont be those but will be similar, and in bronze, not black.
What do you think so far?
