Ok, finally broke something! - w00t - . (not)

During a bit of 'drag testing' yesterday, I snapped the spider-gear for my drivers side - now I have have permanent 1rwd right rear tire - drive.
Wtf.

Rewelded - and re-snapped it today... w00t.

I need a new carrier, anyone have a spare? If not, Me go Get New One Tmororoasorasor... Otomor.. ? Tomorrow. (drunk...oops) - From pick and pool.

Do I need to take/wheels/calipers - etc - off to get the carrier out? Can someone give me a very very brief step by step to remove one easily?

And now to my REAL question...

Does anyone remember the name of that guy who USED to share spaces with Tecmotion and does all that machining and stuff? He's short and awesome and usually very happy :)

Ok.. uhm... Im going to drink more of my misery away, if anyone has a carrier, wants to tell me how to take one out, or just wants to say hi ... They should call me..

OK, I have a spare carrier, it is sitting outside and is a little rusty but it should clean up.

1) You need to pull your your calipers, brakes and rear axles out.
2) remove rear diff cover and 4 carrier main cap bolts (do not mix up the caps, need to be reinstalled on the same side the same way around!!!
3) "pry" out the carrier, it is under preload so they can be a PITA to remove. Getting them back in can be worst,
4) My carrier needs bearings installed, I can get the part numbers when I get home but bearing supply usually stock them. Press the bearings on
5) Swap the crown gear onto the carrier, use locktite and torque bolts
6) Reinstall carrier, this can be the biggest PITA as it is a press fit into the housing, but with some gentle persuasion it will usually go in.
7) install caps & torque, then check gear freeplay (and pray it is OK)
8) install rear cover, axles, brakes, fill with oil

Those are the steps in a nutshell

If this is the one from your '89, Ian, step #0.5 is to get it back from me. I can give it up, but I've still got to measure the tone ring section so I can have my True Trac built. I think I've also got an early carrier, i.e. without tone ring.

There might be an issue, though - I've heard that the early ABS cars got 96 tooth tone rings, and in '89 they started using 48 tooth tone rings. The one you gave me, Ian, is a 48 tooth ring. I've got to make sure my '89 has a 48 tooth before I go cutting up my True Trac, but if Raz's car has a 96 tooth tone ring, neither his ABS nor his speedo will work correctly.

Why didn't you say that in the first place?

Name's Trevor. Company is Colecraft. 681-3683 but that's out of my head so don't blame me if it's wrong...

What do you need? One-offs usually are a couple of month wait, if he even does them anymore. I know he was telling me couple of weeks ago that he wasn't doing them anymore...

I can verify that.
Raz, it has taken 4 months for me to get a pulley made

Trevor is so busy he does not need the little stuff, he makes BIG money on his regular contracts.

He's got 2 machines in that shop besides a metal-cutting bandsaw and an air compressor. He's got a CNC lathe and a CNC mill. Nothing is "simple" unless you've got a CAD drawing that's compatible with his software. And...if that's the case, it's a one-off and he's likely not going to do it.

If it's "simple", take it to a regular machine shop and get it done...

I don't think anyone was trying to argue Raz
Dale has a lot of "experience" working with or dealing with Trevor. He is a great guy and does fantastic work, but his main focus is on filling orders for several key accounts. Even though Dale & Matt spend very large amounts of $$ there, they wait a long time for his orders to get completed.

I think the point was to say that Trevor will probably not be able to help you in the time that you need, so in trying to save you some time and effort driving down to his shop we were just letting you know what to expect. If he can help you fast, good on you, but we would be very surprised.

8) My sayings go with salt - it is known.

I want trevor to make a minispool for the 1031, so we (dale and matt and I) can sell them on ebay/tbricks...

so When i've fixed my own diff, im going to pull another one and make the cad drawing to make a minispool.

It'll be a hot-cakes item fo sho.
