Hey guys, Haven't been here in a while, But thought I'd post my new aquisition... Picked up a 1982 244 Turbo that a friends' neighbor was going to give to the Kidney foundation.

It actually ran with a boost, but the turbo is pooched (loud shrieking noise coming from the turbocharger) The car is a one owner with 137,000 original Kms, and the body is an 8 out of 10... It's the burgundy/ tan leather color combo. It's got the 4spd auto... not sure if I'm going to do anything about that yet.

The interior is shot due to having sat in out in the elements for the past six years, plus the sunroof leaked and the drivers seat has been absorbing the moisture making the interior smell really awful. The Virgos are immaculate.

Paid $200 for it. I'll know more about it once I get it towed over to my house & will post some pix shortly.

Talk to y'all soon,

GLT_North

awesome! redoing the interior should be easy peasy with pick a part, even finding a decent used turbo. we'll help make sure that k-jets is running great too.

^ Yes, I'm actually looking forward to a trip back to the pick-a-part, finding 2 door specific parts (seats, door trims etc) has been problematic so hopefully it'll be a little easier to find 4 door parts.

The car also has some light damage to the hood and the grille and headlight trim rings are all busted up.. this is the reason it was parked (again, should be an easy pick-a-part score) The floor is amazingly solid for having had water inside it having sat in in the tall weeds behind a garage for so long. No rust at all on the fuse block, fuel pumps appear to work fine. Front strut spring seats will need to be replaced... I imagine I'll be doing a bushing job on this one as well.

I'm excited... I can hardly wait to get it home & start ripping it apart!

I've got a set of very nice headlight bezels and I think I've got a good turbo grill. I've even got a hood but it's got some rust on it. It's silver so cleaning it up and repainting would look after the rust...

^ Thanks... I might take you up on the hood & the grille... I've got some good headlight bezels in & among my stash of parts in the garage.

I do need several interior trim parts that I know are going to be tough to get at the PAP. I'll need to get a new dash from IPD as the old one is anihilated, but I also need glove box & door, and the trim piece around the front seat belt anchors (centre console ?), tan in color. front door panels are shot due to cracking at the top & of course the map pockets are gone.

I'll also be looking for new seats at the very least (Currently tan leather, and completely destroyed) I'd consider swapping out the whole interior if I could find a complete one.

The sunroof has been siliconed & taped shut. Awesome.

Who knows about the mechanicals but it's got a newish steering rack, tie rod ends, exhaust, front & rear brake pads (although the rotors don't look so good... hello IPD, again.) rad & some other stuff (someone sunk some money into it a while back to try & get it back in shape, but they lost interest) I was unable to drive it but according to the guy who did run it very briefly a couple years ago, it ran & drove well.

I'm going to try & get it home tomorrow.

Well, got the 244 home last night after a bit of screwing around. Met the tow truck at the previous owners house. As noted previously, the car did run but I did not attempt to drive it. I got there before the wrecker and fired it up, & attempted to drive it out of it's resting place... nothing. It was only then that I noticed the several ATF fluid bottles behind the passenger seat. Pop the hood, sure enough the tranny is dry. The car is sitting on four half inflated tires that are sunk deeply into the ground so there's little chance of me pushing it out. Grab a funnel from the truck and dump the two full litres of ATF in and it did move, and with a little persuasion it rolled under its own power out into the alley. Next problem, no brakes and no e-brake. Hopefully it just requires a bleeding, but getting the rolling hulk of a car to stop on the gently inclined alley was a bit of an adrenaline moment. Finally the wrecker shows up, dolly's up the car and we are on our way. I'm driving behind the wrecker and noticing bits of grille, headlight bezel and other bits dropping off as we manuever across the city. Finally get home, & I tell the wrecker operator to just drop it in the alley, & I'll drive it into the driveway. Wrecker leaves, and I go to start the car. Nothing. Everything powers up, but no starter action.. not even a solenoid click. Now the car is abandonned in my back alley with no chance of me being able to push it up into the driveway by myself. Call friends, no one is handy. I decide to just give it a tap with my truck to try & push it up & out of the way. This works fine until the slightly higher bumper on my truck skips over the top of the Volvo bumper and becomes lodged there. I manage to get the car in position, get out of the truck and put the Volvo in P, them proceed to back the truck off the Volvo bumper. It is at this point that I figure out why the car won't start... the transmission is not moving all the way into park, and is instead resting between P and R. I back the truck up about five feet and watch in horror as the Volvo starts to roll backwards. It hits the truck (by now I am attracting my neighbors attention) Stop the truck, gather a few neighbors and we push the car back into the driveway, block the tires, and that's where she sits now. (My neighbor named it 'brownie')

It was too dark to take pics by the time this little gong show was over, and I needed a beer. I'm going to try & fix safety switch so that I can start it and get it in the garage. I'll try to post some pix tonight.

The good news is that the body is in better shape than I thought.

Yup, this was a good read...almost as fun as having my Jag roll off the car transporter and almost go through my neighbour's cement fence! Good luck getting it all sorted out. By the time we are all done, Calgary will be purged of 240 parts.

lol, great story, probably not so funny in person. Is this the same car that was on kijiji just recently? Must be with the 137 km, sure doesn't sound like it's in the same condition as the description in the ad...

^ Yes, That's the one I'm sure.

Originally they wanted $700 for it, but it is pretty obvious that it requires a serious amount of work. I guess it was at the point that they were just going to send the car to the wreckers, so I'm glad I caught it in time.

I took a little time to crawl around & under it with the trouble light last night, and I am really amazed at how solid the body is. It also appears to have a new (ish) exhaust system. But yes, it is rough;

-Needs new hood, grille, headlight bezels and one marker light
-New seats, dash, glove box, door skins... lets just say it needs a new interior
-Needs new turbo (I noticed oil at the intake yesterday on top of the bearing noise)
-Brakes need to be fixed- hopefully just air in the system, & new rotors possibly, fix e-brake
-Only one of the four power windows work, & misc. electrical gemlins need to be sorted out
-Needs new spring seats
-Needs a water pump, probably needs a timing belt
-Need to find out where the ATF is going
-Needs oil change badly & probably a flush... the oil in it now is like molasses
-Belly pan is missing
-I'll do all the belts & hoses, filters & fluids & all the other stuff you'd expect from a car that's sat so long.

I'm sure there'll be more once I spend some time on it.

The body really is the good news: Rockers are clean, wheel wells are clean, drivers spare tire well is solid, passenger side only has one small hole. THe floor is totally solid, and the clear coat has flaked off the roof, trunk and hood. I'll get it all prepped at home & roll it over to a friends' shop for paint, when that time comes.

Probably didn't fire up because the linkage is messed up and it was stuck between reverse and park, not because there's anything wrong with the neutral safety switch. Try "finding" a spot between reverse and neutral, and it should start. Failing that, there's a connector that goes to your shifter (that's where the NSS is) and you can jumper the connections to make it start in any gear.

^ Thanks, I'll check that out tonight.

I think the reason I'm really excitied about this car is because it reminds me of my old '84 244Ti. I had this car when I lived in Vancouver, and unfortunately it suffered some major malfunctions shortly after moving to Calgary in '01, & due to a lack of space and funds at the time I was unable to keep it. I never should have let that thing go.

I had a guy follow me to my office one day in 2001 & ask me if I wanted to sell it. I declined, but sold the same fellow the winters on rims that I had left over after I let the car go. Was that one of you guys perchance ?

Yup, they were asking $700 in the ad and claimed $1600 worth of work had just been done and was ready to restore?? Sounds like they got the restoration part right, have fun with the new car!

I've got some extra turbo parts kicking around. you could easily put together a stock turbo if you wanted. let me know. I've also got a too big T4 compressor on a T3 (stock 240T) turbine, recently rebuilt cold side, that I'd sell, only if you wanted a dragster. No boost until about 3000...

^ Thanks. I'm going to pull the turbo on this one soon & see what's up with it. from the symptoms, it's likely not very good.

I got it started this afternoon. The problem is definitely either in the shifter linkage or that switch. Thanks for the tip.
