Ok, I'm going to look at it at 9 pm.

I'm pretty familiar with these cars, but is there anything you want me to look at in particular ? (Anyone, feel free to chime in on that one)

I'll bring my camera as well.

EDIT: If I'm not back by 11 someone call the cops

I'll leave it in your capable hands, other than what's been said by others above I would need someone to look at it if I went myself  If he has mtce. history maybe some idea on where the car came from, although a carfax should dig up it's history.

EDIT: If he's watching "Dexter" when you get there.... RUN!!!!

Well it seemed like a fairly solid all round car. It's the current owners' daily driver and it has 205 kms on it. My thoughts:

Engine appears to have no leaks visible from the engine compartment. Visible coolant leaks, runs well, no noises, clean exhaust. . Engine oil full but dirty. the tail pipe is broken off giving it a bit of a rumble, and I think there may be another exhuast leak back there. Under the car there is wetness on the bottom of the transmission which I believe is usually caused by a leak around the overdrive, but I could be mistaken. A little wet around the rear main, and maybe around the pan as well. Floor appears solid. Strut spring seats getting a little crusty but otherwise seem solid enough. Clutch fan appears to be seized. Battery sounds a little weak.

The interior is in pretty good condition and with a good cleaning could probably com out looking pretty good. Is missing the black trim piece on the glovebox. Dash has 3 or 4 cracks. seats felt good, small crack in the windshield, Apparently the sunroof doesn't leak, All plastic seems to be intact. Fan motor works fine.

Driving: Engine pulls well, car steers tight and no funny noises over the short distance I drove it. Suspension felt a little soft. Slight shimmy through the steering wheel.. doesn't go away on braking. Car brakes well. Rotors looked okay. Clutch seemed like it may be on it's way out. There was something strange going on with the shifter... loose linkage or a bad guide or something... the current owner drove it no problem but I faught with it. P Brake and Brake Failure idiot lights stay on.

Body: It does look good and if that's all you're looking for this car will do the job. It has been repainted, and the paint job has held up fairly well, theres some sratches and dings. Having said that there are some rust issues around the rear wheel wells and it looks like the rear wheel tubs have been at least partially fibreglassed. The inside of the tubs have been coated in some sort of rubberized paint making inspection difficult. THe back of the rocker on the driver side is starting to deteriorate & Both rockers are getting a bit rusty. There is some rust on the bottoms of the doors. For some reason there is a non- volvo trim piece replacing the original one on the rocker panels below the doors... it was chrome painted black and it's starting to fleck as the pictures I'm about to post will show.

I give this car a 6 out of 10. It's still a pretty solid old GLT but someones' going to have to spend some time & money on it if they want a really good car.

I may edit this post as I remember things

Yikes, that thing ain't worth $2200. That fiberglass work is pure fromage and the rust on the front rocker is there. Sure the wheels look nice and with the rest of the problems (soft suspension, brake, clutch) I'd say this is worth more like $500. Don't worry about walking away - there are more solid cars out there with less problems.

Just my 2-bits.

Yep, that thing is trouble. I'd hate to know what lurks beneath that paint job. Scary.

Hey GLT, thanks for taking the time to go look at this car and put up a great report, it is really appreciated.

From what I can see, and from Craig and Greg's comments, I have to agree it is not a $2200 car and appears to be way more than I am looking to get myself in to.

As always things are not as they seem. The seller told me there was no rust and that it had been repaired before he bought the car, no wonder the ad only had one picture taken from the front. The third to last picture of the driver's fender with the big sag in the paint tells me the quality of the repairs is likely equal to the quality of the paint job. It would be interesting to see what's underneath that bastard trim piece on the rockers, or under the glass in the wheel tubs.

Oh well as Craig said there are other cars out there. This might be a good car for someone with a lot of skill/time/money, but the seller would have to give it away which he never gave the impression he was inclined to do. Thanks to everyone for their comments and feedback and especially to GLT_North for taking the time to go look in person.

I concur with the others, I don't think this car would be a good buy for you. I'd be scared to even pick it up as a fixer, As the quality of the bodywork and paint suggest a less than good repair job. I figure it's a $1000- 1200 car for somebody who just wants to drive it, although I wouldn't pay that for it.

Are you in Edmonton Woodenshoes ? I do run across some pretty decent old Volvos every once in a while. If I find something good I'll let you know. What are you looking for exactly ?

^ nope, I live just east of Lethbridge.

Looking for a 242, doesn't have to be a turbo but must be a stick (of course). My mech. skills are low so something in reasonable shape that I can drive and work/learn on is good. Also looking for a 740 for one of the kids, must be a stick (of course) and NA. This one should be in decent shape as well and no 16 valve or turbo's to keep the teens moving as slow as possible.

Thanks, Jim

Have I got a proposition for you, Jim!

I've got a '75 242 shell (body ONLY - let your imagination run wild on that one) and not only would it give you a mostly rust-free shell, but a blank canvas to build exactly the 242 of your dreams, AND it'll build your mechanical skills at the same time.

How can you go wrong?

I'll keep an eye out.

Depending on how this 244 Turbo turns out I may sell my GLT... we'll see. The other half was plenty pissed off when the 244 came home with me last week... in fact I had to lie about where I was going last night so that I wouldn't have to say the "V" word, and be mocked and ridiculed for the rest of the evening

LOL, not only would it not be ready to drive for next summer, the project could conceivably outlive me!!

I hear you, the minister of finance isn't completely on board with a 242 either, have been contemplating using the excuse that the 242 came up before I found a 740 for the daughter. This of course opens up another can of worms ie: "FINE LET HER DRIVE THE 242 THEN"..... DOH!!! I can't win. All will be well if I can sell my truck and probably our wagon too... better start another thread.

Thanks, yes I saw this one might not be bad. I haven't phoned yet as I am thinking about a 740 first for my daughter before I get something for me.
