Hi Guys,

My kids thought that it would be a great idea to load my cd player up with loonies and surprise surprise....it blowed up.

I'm looking for a stock stereo part # SC-816. It is out of a 98' V70.

Any leads would be appreciated.

Chris

i would just reccomend going to an aftermarket unit. for the price you would probably pay for a new/used one you would be on your way to a decent aftermarket. other than that, try one of the volvo wreckers in town, or maybe one of the guys on here has one from when they upgraded to an aftermarket. best of luck

aftermarket. seriously, aftermarket. You'll get something that will be better quality, if you get it installed right that will look just as good if not better in your v70...etc etc.

I remember asking the dealership in Ottawa about this...I've been picking fights with my cd player for as long as I can remember...they said it was either 700 bucks or 900 bucks...can't remember now, too many years ago. (needless to say I just deal with it lol)

Yes I hear you about the aftermarket unit and normally that would be my thinking as well, but at this point I do not have the time to spend sorting out the install of an aftermarket unit.

My wife has already lived without tunes for about two months and she is getting a bit ornary about the whole thing. So my thinking is if I can find a cheap oem unit that I can simply plug and play, I can go from being a chump to a rock star in about 4 minutes. Thats what I'm talking about!

Our units head back to volvo for fixing and junk so we don't keep any cores. Best bet would be euroworks (swanys) or ebay, but they are both not cheep.

There are about 15 on eBay right now ranging from $54 to $199. Make sure you get the code with it or it's kinda useless...

The code is the bitchy part, of can be. Our dealership is pretty lax about codes...if you are willing to show them that you own a volvo they really don't care, which is good for me. Besides, who the hell steals a stock stereo?

They are cheap on either carpart.com or ebay for the most part and easy to replace.

I like the factory head unit. The stock amp really is horrible (more just kinda weak actually...its also just a kinda cheapie alpine that runs worse as it gets hotter), as are the papery speakers (the biggest offenders). The headunit is a nice alpine with a hideous volvo face plate that no one wants to steal...whats so horrible about that? Granted, at some level you can do a lot better in the aftermarket, but I don't think the car is the optimal place to listen to good music anyway. I don't even care much about the not so great stock amp...I don't want the music loud enough that I can't hear what the car is doing.

Live or at home or best of all...a good live band at home playing till 3am.

Yeah ebay is the place, I was hoping for a local unit so I could have it for xmas.

Anyone know what the difference between the premium sound system model and the regular. I was thinking cars with the premium system comes with an amp. cause my car does not have an amp?

Premium sound cars usually get a better amp/external amp and slightly less bad speakers in volvo land is the general theme from everything from a 940 and newer, though I confess that I don't know the newest of new volvos that well...thats all Andy. At least on 960s and latter cars, they also give you a little more gadgety headunit and CD changer if your heart desires.

Volvo speakers are woefully aweful on most everything until about 1998, where they get passably horrible.

The premium systems of today use dynaudio speakers and have a bunch of power and surround sound decoding and lots of speakers, the headunits allow you to change the delays on the speakers to account for how many people are in the car and have a 6 band equalizer for both the front and one for the rear as well.

The high performance are basic but still sound good.

I like how the stereos sound in the new cars, they are a great experience
