we change them every 48k but they dont need to be changed every 48k. This is something easy too look at, 3 screws on the rotor and you can look to see what the contacts are like inside.

Image = bad

Image = poor spark

Would that explain the other symptoms as well (no guts when cold)?

Possiby, but I do believe there is more at work here then just spark plugs. As Matt said about the O2 sensors though we have seen a failed O2 sensor take out the other one too. I would like to see what your Maf is reading when hot.

Before you get some crazy ideas in your head too these are a bunch of variables that would be checked when trying to figure out what is wrong so don't go assuming that everything is broken.

Had a 98-00 R in today that ran like shit because of the ECT sensor and the thermostat was sticky, changed that and ran like a top.

You should really replace the stuff you have no idea how old it is- cap and rotor, plug wires, filters, all the maintenance stuff (EGR system, other new volvo stuff I don't know about maybe). Regular maintenance goes a long way.
