Ok i need a car that I can beat around in this winter. I really don't feel like spending another winter fighting with the 740 just to get it going.

So i know i'm going to get allot of "Wrong Wheel Drive" comments but i feel thats probably the way to go because they are newer cars plus they will be easier to control in the winter. i'm looking for an 850 (NOT '93) or early S70. so if any knows where I can get a decently priced 850 or early S70 in reasonable condition please let me know. im tired of looking at 850's of kijiji only to discover what the owner describes as "GREAT CONDITION" is recently vacuumed carpets.

Thanks

I'll take a rear drive volvo over a front one any day. Yes, with equivalent tires, FWD has a slight advantage in acceleration traction, but with good snow tires, RWD is better balanced for everything else. A little weight in the back and they are un stoppable.

My 2c, pick up a 240/740/940 for a winter beater. especially one with working butt warmers.

What Athal said. Get some studded Hakka's and 2-3 sand bags in the trunk, try and get a couple of the bags up on the shelf so they are over the axle. WWD might be better for pulling away from lights etc but RWD is better after that for steering out of skids etc. Having said all of that I'll keep an eye out for any decent 850/S70 down here, rare as they are.

I dunno, Roberta's 850 is miles better in the winter than any of my cars. Mine were all more fun, but hers is just point and shoot. The torque steer sucks when you're on variabl traction surfaces, but you get used to that. You've always got a handbrake... you've just got to learn how to drive a FWD differently, that's all!

The most fun car I've ever owned was FWD. It had a >slight< advantage in the polar moment of inertia department, being only 10' long stem-to-stern...

And...believe it or not, Matt bought the engine for that Mini from none other than yours truly...in about 1987.
It's a long story that some here have endured. I'll spare you the details.

And Doug, that Toyota would be a perfect winter beater/disposable car. Tough as nails and loads of parts at PnP. Tires are cheap and the temptation to make it go faster is virtually non-existent.

I am so making you tell me that story soon :)

Toyotas are the ideal a->b car in -40 on the cheap.
