I have a camera that does video  No sense in letting the masses imagine how cool the Smurf will sound...high compression!

Ahah! Yes, video is needed.

Well, after a long night working last night, I get 'er started this morning, checked all the fluids, and promptly got stuck in my back alley. After getting out, I went for a spin, and it was hard finding some dry pavement to let 'er rip, but everything seemed good. Idle was good. Came home, and the car would barely idle, exactly the same as it used to anytime I revved it above 4 grand. Just barely runs. Sigh.

Went to work fine, started it for the first time cold after work, and it would BARELY run. This would sometimes happen before when cold, but eventually it would level out and idle and run fine. I always assumed it was related to compression. But nope, I barely dragged the thing home, feathering the clutch to get the thing to move. Sucked. Checked hoses and connections at home, everything looked good. Got in again, turned the key, VROOOOM, runs perfectly again. WTF? Went for a HARD drive, and it ran perfectly, and idled perfectly after slowing down. HUH?

Anyone have any ideas? The CPR is a NOS item, so I assume its good, but maybe not. At this point I suspect it as its the only fuel related part I changed.

That said, on this last drive, she screamed like a banshee. No hesitation revving to redline, and 2nd gear gets you really moving like never before. There's also a slightly different whirring sound from the engine which sounds cool. Hopefully I can get these other issues sorted.

Drove the car again today. First start this morning was poor, and wouldn't idle, but it ran fine after that. Second start today was great and idled perfect, but as the car warmed up, it ran worse. Stopped and started again, and it ran fine. Weird.

Sounds like it's fuel related. Glad it revs free. More power? I thought you'd changed the pump with no change in the problem. Have you taken apart the fuel distributor and cleaned it out?

Guess it depends how far apart you take it but that's not something I'd tackle. Maybe leave it soak overnight in a bucket of lacquer thinner. I took a Mercedes fuel distributor apart just so I could understand how they work. Once the springs sproinged I knew it was never going back together... #-o

Sounds like the airflow plate may be sticking which could be related to the plunger in the fuel distributor. Maybe run a can if injector cleaner through it and see if that helps before you start pulling things apart.

Will the ducting fit your B21FT fuel distributorairflow plate? If so, swapping that would be a good test and would likely produce a bit more powah.

Yes, fuel pump is a NOS item, and changing that a while back produced no changes.

Car has been seafoamed already, although I do like smoke shows!

Craig, yeah, taking apart a fuel distributor sounds kinda scary, so I don't think I'll be trying that too soon. There is definitely more power now, and the power delivery is much smoother too. I wouldn't say the difference is massive, but I'll know more once I'm on some dryer roads. The good news is there's no pinging that I can hear, so we're okay on crap fuel still.

Matt, that is a really good idea, to try out the b21ft bits. The distributor does sit in the same spot, but I don't think the ducting would quite fit (is the mouth of the plate bigger?), though I'm sure something could be made to work. I do have a spare b20f fuel distributor/plate/air box, though its condition is unknown. Maybe I'll try the injector cleaner and go from there and see if the spare setup works.

I wouldn't think the V6 / B21FT fuel dizzy would work with the B20 airflow plate, but you could try it. The airflow plate would be a worthy addition if you can make the ducting work out.

I agree - if you're all fine from the tank forward, you've got spark and compression should be fine...everything else points to that fuel distributor. Have you changed out the coil? I've got a spare around here somewhere with a B20 ignition brain box (but they apparently never go bad). It most likely isn't the coil - but after the fuel distributor gets changed, what else do you have?

Want to convert to carbs?

I've never changed the coil, no. Could try that out. Carbs? Nah, I'm not quite at that point yet.
