Hey all,

I purchased a 1967 122s in the fall of 2010. The car is in almost perfect condition....almost.

Got a weird problem with the rear brakes. In January I noticed the brake fluid had dropped to dangerous levels. Took the car in for service & the rear brake adjusters were seized. The adjusters were sorted & the brakes bled but I've still got a spongy feeling. The first press is spongy, second press is solid. The brake lines were replaced and the system bled in December.
My mechanic can't figure it out, he thinks the problem is between the MC and the brake booster. I've been digging around volvo forums trying to find any info that would point me in the right direction but i'm at a loss.
Is there any trick to bleeding 120's?
I know the usual 'start from the furthest from the master cylinder' but that's not correcting the problem.

anyone with any ideas?
(it's been a month,i want my car back!)

And you're sure the adjustment was carried out correctly? If the shoes are out of adjustment, drum brake systems generally tend to require a double-pump. It sort of feels like you'd imagine air to feel, but it's not.

cheers man,
I'll ask him about that, is there anything specific to these volvos regarding the adjustment?

Okay I talked to Mechanic & he had checked the adjustment again, apparently that's what he initally thought as well. He believes the problem is somewhere between the master cylinder and the brake booster.

Welcome aboard - I'll assume you had the fluid flused. If so, then it has to be the adjustment. There litterally isn't any other reason for a double-pump as long as the brakes are bleed and adjusted correctly.

Edit - just read that you've got a booster. I don't know how that would affect things, or if there are special bleeding procedures involved. Most people seem to disable them when they stop working. It would be helpful to install a smaller master cylinder if you do this. Wilwood and AP make drop-in master cylinders in a variety of sizes.

What was your mechanic's bleed procedure? Pump and hold, anti-return container, pressure, reverse pressure? Sometimes you can wear out your leg getting all the air out (right Craig?).

Yes - the bleed procedure on a 122 seems to take longer than on a 240! I don't know why, but it does. I missed the booster thing as well. They are notorious but can be either by-passed or early 140 boosters are the same (IIRC). I think the leather seal in the MC goes bad and bleeds off the vac. Simple to test. Pump and hold the brake with the car off, then turn the ignition on. If the brake peddle goes down a little - booster is fine. If not - replace/disconnect/toss in lake...whatever.

Mechanic called today, master cylinder is the culprit. Anyone know anywhere or anyone in Calgary selling these?

No master cylinder? How will he stop?

I figure you'd be the best one to tell him which Wilwood unit to buy.

Which one should I be looking at? & can I still use the booster?

Ugh...was thinking booster as it is the usual suspect...

http://www.wilwood.com/MasterCylinders/ ... 20Cylinder

I have one of these and won't be using it when my car is re-assembled. I forget what size it is but I can look next time I'm in the garage.

Not sure it can be used with a booster but I see no reason why one shouldn't try...

Recognize this?

Hi - just tuned-in.

That is probably the best bet, but if you just need rubber seals, you can get them from Olof in Vancouver. He has all things old Volvo. 1-604-992-9664. Not that expensive, quick, easy. Has a lot of things in stock.

Hey all, sorry for not posting lately....
Thanks for all the help.

The MC the garage ordered was wrong.
Ordered one today from FCpeuro.com on the advice of Cancer Man (Bert & Jacks)...

Fingers crossed!!!

I'm having double-pump issues too. No booster on my car. When I spin the drum I hear an occasional slight whisper. How much do I want to hear, and how do I check the master cylinder?
