Hey all,

I just finished a +T job on a 745 with a B230F and Garrett T3.

Runs and drives great...but i noticed it started leaking oil like a mofo.

I had put in a 9/16NPT(iirc) T fitting in place of the stock oil pressure switch to feed the turbo and an oil pressure sender... taking it apart i found this...

Image

Whoopsies. :?

How did others deal with this? Can i get some sort of M14 to 9/16NPT fitting?
Should i go with pipe threads or keep it straight threaded with an oring?

I'm half tempted to just hack off the switch and weld it to the T fitting...

I THINK you meant 3/8" NPT. 3/4" NPT is just over 1" in diameter.

At the very front of the block is a 1/8" NPT galley plug. I've used this in the past.

Edit - the B230 (metric machine thread) fitting is sealed by a copper washer, not by the threads, IIRC. NPT piping is sealed by the threads. You might be able to find an adapter but you'd be just as well off using the galley plug at the front of the block and bending up some 1/4" tube to get it to the turbo. You'll want a swagelok or some other kind of ferrule unioned fitting, I'm sure. Or a hose with unioned ends, but you'll have to make sure you support it well enough.

For what it's worth, you may want to avoid brass fittings on an oil feed line as those are more prone to breakage than steel or stainless fittings.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm still doing some homework over here to find the best solution.

@Gasbrick: What type of 'breakage' are you referring to?

They can break from vibration, especially if you have hard piping or a heavy sensor, shut-off valve, etc screwed into the fitting. They will normally fail at a thread root. A few +T-ers on T-bricks have documented these failures. I have seen it on generators and diesel engines (lukily with oil pressure engine shut-off switches). Steel fittings are more forgiving of abuse and much more resistant to fatigue failure.

I've made this mistake on my own, with an early attempt at adding an oil temp sensor to the oil pressure tap. Fortunately it only cracked and leaked everywhere, rather than dumping all of the oil pressure. If it happens on a turbo feed you'll lunch the thing pretty quickly.

well, i suppose i'll be learning things the hard way as well...just grabbed $3 worth of fitting adapters to make it work, lol

However, I'm replacing the electrical oil pressure gauge with a mechanical, so there will be less mass supported by the assembly...we'll see how it goes i suppose.

Everything i do seems to be an iterative process of making mistakes and doing it properly later...this car is no exception, lol

You know that there is a factory electric oil pressure gauge and sender found on all 240 turbos. Mechanical oil pressure gauges are just a leak waiting to happen for the same reason your brass T fitting will leak/break.

Also use the galley plug at the front of your block for your turbo oil feed, use a proper -An line or have a steel hardline made. If you dont do it right it may cost you your turbo or engine.

I can't comment on your pressure switch selection, but regarding the adapter there's a great place in town that sells all types of adapters and fittings...
Green Line Hose & Fittings they have two different locations in Calgary
http://www.greenlinehose.com/locations.htm

You can navigate their website to find their adapters section or...
http://www.greenlinehose.com/_pdf/pulsar/Adapters.pdf
Follow the link and go to page 93 or 94 of the actual document by referring to the page number on the bottom left and/ or right of each page. You are looking for BSP to pipe (NPT) adapter 93 is male NPT and 94 is female.

You may notice the sealing washer in some of the pics. It is included with every adapter for the BSP side of the adapter...

Good Luck

Thanks for the link, i definitely went to Greenline for assistance with this and they gave me the aforementioned $3 worth of fittings, but i haven't actually seen their catalog. The M14x1.5 thread adapter they gave me had an oring and such with it, made for a good fit.

The reason i chose mechanical fittings is due to a set of mechanical autometer gauges i "Liberated" from a buddy's Nissan s13.

By the way, how much clearance do you get at the front galley plug? does anyone have a picture of their setup?
