Thanks Matt, yeah it's not looking so great. I lol'd at Dale's scope creep comment from Craig's header thread when I was trying to squeeze a new header in to the project, this may not be that funny after all...

I can't help but laugh at the irony in some of my car adventures. Before I got this car I really had a thing for a TR6 and read a fair amount on their inherent crank end play problem, and now I'm looking at the same thing wit this car. Before I got the current 745T I really debated on getting something newer and looked at WRX's a lot but wasn't sold on reliability, especially head gaskets. Then the head gasket blew on the 745Tnot long after I got it, I think I have some really bad Carma going on here...

I dropped off the alternator awhile back while I was preparing to pull the engine and finally got word that it's toast, not rebuildable. It's a Bosch unit, not sure of the specs as I have to go grab it yet. Was reading on SWEM that Ron prefers the AC Delco which I thought was odd? Any thoughts on which brand to get?

There are parts currently in development that will allow you to convert to the compact Denso alternator for either 80 or 100 A of power. Alternators from Phil Flood are $93 shipped con US.

Ok, I'm in for one.

Any issues with running that big of an alternator on 50 year old wiring. Upgrading required?

Upgrade would be required for sure - unless you'd like an engine fire. We can talk about it in a while. So just concentrate on the engine build and the rest will come around in due course.

So as if I don't have enough to do with the B20 engine build I decide to gut the interior and tackle the floors. "Somebody" offered to help out so hopefully the grunt work passes me by. Also tore out the ugly A/C unit, the weird Blaupunkt stereo control head and the 140 sourced (I think, definitely doesn't work in a 122) finger pinching floor console. I knew from a quick peek under the rubber floor before that there was some rust and fortunately it's all just surface rust and no holes. The drivers floor is the worst with some crusty stuff, but it's all pretty hard.

Couple of trim removal questions, the hood release knob should just thread off? I tried holding the shaft with a pair of pliers but it's either really tight or not threaded? The rear seat 1/4 panels, other than the 2 obvious screws and the seat belt retractor bolt what holds these on? Must be some sort of lift up and off thing?? No obvious screws at the back but it's still attached.

Planning on POR-15'ing the floor, seems to be some conflict online about prepping. I was going to clean and degrease, then wire wheel the real crusty stuff on the drivers floor and hit the rest of the painted areas with a DA sander (say 80 grit) to scuff it up. Then another clean followed by the Metal Ready and then the POR-15. Sound like a plan?

Also, before I put it all back together Craig had noticed awhile back that whoever installed the iPd sway bars in the rear never put down the reinforcing plates on the back panel. I can't see paying $90 USD just for the rear bar install kit to get just those plates, any ideas on what material they are made out of and how big? I'm guessing it's fairly thin/soft as iPd's instructions talk about setting it in place and hammer forming it in to the position over the rear panel stamping.

I have those plates from Craig's old IPD bar, you can have them as I mounted mine differently.

The hood release cable unscrews from the back. You've got to disconnect the cable from the hood release and thread it back through the firewall to get the whole thing out. AFAIK, the knob doesn't come off until it's good and ready to.

Your POR-15 plan sounds fine. Prep it, for sure. It doesn't stick to shiny metal.

Thanks Matt, much appreciated!!

I noticed the hood release had the lock nut on the back which I undid and thought surely I don't have to pull this all the way back... Guess so.

I'll be in YYC reasonably soon and can pick them up.

That sounds good all around, thanks guys. Not in a super hurry, probably won't be getting the interior re-installed till mid April at the earliest.
