Vik and I got into a discussion last evening on the legality of clear bulbs in the front signal lights. The Alberta Highway Traffic Act states:

(7) When lamps are used for the purpose of indicating turns,
...(c) the lamps showing to the front shall be located at or near
the front on the same level and as widely spaced laterally
as practicable and when in use shall emit a white or amber
light that is plainly visible from the front in normal
sunlight for a distance of at least 250 metres, and
(d) the lamps showing to the rear shall be located at the same
level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable and
when in use shall emit a red or amber light that is plainly
visible from the rear in normal sunlight for a distance of at
least 250 metres.

So clear signal lights on the front are legal, but also mentioned here is the reason I will not pass a vehicle when doing an inspection that has painted over the lights. Even though they will "light" they are not visable from the distances required in the legislation, approx 2 city blocks.

Now this is where interpretation of the law becomes a little grey. When looking at side marker lights:

Side marker lamps
33(1) A motor vehicle or trailer manufactured on or after January
1, 1971 shall, on and after January 1, 1981, be equipped with, on
each side of it,
(a) one amber side marker lamp as close to the front of the
motor vehicle or trailer, exclusive of the trailer tongue, as
is practicable,
(b) one red side marker lamp as close to the rear of the motor
vehicle or trailer as is practicable

Thought this might interest some

Since 1979 Volvo has incorporated the side and rear marker lights into one unit. Since back in the 122 days they have incorporated the front and side marker lights into one unit. I don't see the front fender "marker" lights as anything but decoration and as such would not be part of any section governed by the highway traffic act. In Europe that is a COMPLETELY different story...

At one time there were regulations on how many side marker lights you could have but, as evidenced by some of those rolling light shows, the highway patrol doesn't seem to bother the semis about it anymore...

Agreed Dale, The discussion Vik & I had involved the conversion I did to my lights where the original Volvo park/side marker were modified to include the signal lights.

I like amber lights in the front, what I prefer are the silver bulbs that are amber when lit, not so amber when not. That way you have a nice clean look, and you're legal in all countries - not that I usually care about legality... but blinkers are just yellow.. I mean, it actually BOTHERS me when people blink red ... indicating left or right is not supposed to be red, red means stop...

arrghh... :-)

Yellow rear blinkers are very european things - in the US they're traditionally red.

However, what's hit and miss in the US is how many circuits you've got in the taillight panel. Often they'd try to simplify and clean up the look by making a single, dual-filiment bulb do the duty of marker light, brake light, and blinker light. When the driver pulses his brakes while the blinker's on, you don't know which way he's intending to go!

So long as the blinker light and brake light are separate items, I'm alright with whatever colour the blinker is.
