Hey everyone,

I'd like to get the windows on the 940 tinted. I found this on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0112335808

Good price. Would this be a good way to go or is it too hard to do a good job of it yourself ? I've never tried tinting a car window before. How hard is it to get the tinting on straight and with no air bubbles ? The last thing I want to do is make a mess of my windows.

If DIY tinting is not recommended, what's a good shop to have it done at ?

What percentage of tinting is good to go with ? What's considered street legal here ?

Thanks,

Roj

lots of people go with limo tint on the rear and 35% on the front driver and passenger windows. Any form of tint thats on those front windows is considered illegal though and unless the car had it when you bought it then its a nice ticket.

Exactly right, ant film on the driver's or passenger's side window or front windshield is illegal.

Also make sure you get a window film with metallic dyes not organic. Metallic are not the shiny film, but their color (tint) stays consistent and will not fade. Organic dyes fade to a purple tinge

what they said ^, i dont know about DIY tinting, I have seen few DIY jobs that turned out very good, plus for the extra money that you would pay to get a shop to do it you get a lifetime warrenty against fading, bubbling etc. IMO opinion its better to shell out the money to have it professionally done.

I had shadow tinting do my car, for the 3 back windows it was around $200 but again its garunteed for life.

We've started using Tintmaster on 17th Ave SE. They did a good job on Trevors car a couple of years ago, and I think an excellent job on my 242. About $250 to get all 5 windows done.

I looked at the DIY tinting instructions that company has on-line. Hoo-ahh! Looks pretty involved and time consuming. Plenty of chances and ways to foul it up too. Don't feel too keen on trying to do it myself. I guess I'll wait until I get some scratch together and then take it over to TintMaster to have it done Professionally.

If I get it done I will do the front side windows too even if it's technically illegal. I bought the car in the States and so I can always say it came that way when I bought it. They would have no way to prove otherwise since no one made a record of whether or not any of the windows were tinted when I brought the car in or put it through the two inspections. The front side windows were tinted on my first 940 and I was never hassled about it in the year I was driving it around. I doubt the cops really care about stuff like that. I think they have more important things to concern themselves with. Like Firebombers for instance.

You can say all you want about you getting the car that way. The law reads:

Window glazing

69(1) A person shall not install, replace or cover the window glazing in a windshield or in a left or right side window of a motor vehicle that is beside or forward of the driver with a transparent, translucent or opaque material.

You may not have been stopped, just like many of us have not been stopped for speeding  but the chances are there and the police can make you remove the film before you move the vehicle.

I got stopped twice in my old wagon- First going through clairsholm got pulled over and warned by the rcmp. Got a warning cos we had just moved from ontario where it's legal. Second time in Calgary, $45 fine or something, though I think it's gone up. They were obviously on the lookout for tint jobs- I drove by just as they were finishing up with at pimped out caddy and they chased me down.

My dad (who now has the car) also got a warning last year, and pulled the tint off the front windows. This is/was 20% tint, quite dark.

I did my fronts on the 242, though I did the whole thing 35% so you can still see in ok. Hopefully I won't draw too much attention...

There are just too many rules ! Gawd, those bureaucrats & politicians just have to go and make stupid rules about every little thing, don't they ? It's like they get off on finding different ways to interfere with your personal freedoms and liberties...

Rant, rant, rant, .... :x

And it doesn't have anything to do with cops not being able to see inside the car they just stopped on the highway at night, not knowing whether the person inside is going to flash them their tits or point a gun at them...

I support it, though I'll be tinting my front side windows. Just not all that darkly.

Every time I see a car with tinted front windows it pisses me off. Like Matt said, how does the cop know what he going to get hit with if he can't see in the car?

Not only that, I can't see if the idiot driving can actually see me or is even looking at me so I have no idea what his next move might be. Over 20 years in the courier business trains one to read what other people are about to do. You do that by watching their head/face. If you can't see it, you can't even guess. I don't like guessing, let alone not having a clue...

Personal freedoms and liberties, my ass... 22 years and likely a half a million kilometers in driving the streets of this city says tint on front windows is pure BS and nothing less...

I guess the bright side of that is you also can't tell when they're giving you the finger or mooning you :butthead: ! That's a good thing, isn't it, Dale ? :P

That being said, I don't want to tint my windows real dark, maybe just a 35% tint. I think that's what was on the other 940. For the sake of any cop that happens to pull me over for speeding and to try and avoid getting busted for having tinting on my front side windows I'll simply roll my window down long before the cop walks up to the side of the car to ask for my insurance and registration. That way the cop will have no problem visually assuring him/herself that I'm not about to surprise them pulling a gun on him/her.

Anyways, I won't have any money to blow on a pro tinting job for a while so it's not a huge pressing issue at the moment. But, like Matt I intend to get the fronts done too, just not all that darkly. So I remain defiant and rebellious but in a sort of measured and thoughtful kind of way...
