I'd think 450 RWHP is pushing it for the W58..

I have read about guys pushing 400+ for awhile with it, but it ends sooner or later. I would agree with Matt when he said about 375WHP is the reliable limit.

Here is a usual comment on the supra/lexus forums regarding the W58.

Quote:
and from experience, the w58 blew its guts out for me at 380whp.
and before that no joke i screwed 2 or 3 clutches up before the trans gave out. honestly dont beat on it, dont dyno it hard or your asking for it.
and im not kidding. i went with a v160 because i was sooooo freaking tired off all the problems, plus, i was about to make more power.

Now.. I have no personal experience with the W58 myself. I thought about switching to one for awhile in the lexus but my slightly built auto trans couldn't even handle shifting at WOT. So I decided to stay away.

I've got no plans for HP in the range that would make this transmission become grenade like...can't speak for Dale or Matt, but for the wagon project I'll be under 300hp.

Isn't Rob's car a turbo from the factory, Andy? Shouldn't it have the R154 then?

Is it a JDM car? I can't remember.. if so then it would be the R154

Quote:
The Supra was also available in two non-export models in Japan, the JZA70 with a 2.5 L 280 hp (209 kW) twin-turbo 1JZ-GTE, known as 2.5GT Twin Turbo (JZA70), and with a 2.0 L 210 hp (157 kW) twin-turbo 1G-GTE.

A special version of the 1JZ-GTE equipped JZA70, the 2.5 Twin Turbo R, had black/grey Recaro seats, a Torsen differential (additional braces to mount the diff), Bilstein suspension and uprated springs, larger sway bars, Momo wheel and gear knob and matching interior trim. This was the fastest factory production version of the MK3 Supra, running a mid 14 second 1/4 mile. The Turbo R also included a change to the R154 gearbox which helped with the well known 1st gear thrust washer problem.
