I've got the old one from that blue 242 you bought. It's up on the shelf in the garage. You're welcome to it...

I might take you up on that. how many man hours for an RnR you figure? I might see if it's worth paying my deductible to get both front and rear glass replaced too...

It's probably not worth you trying to install yourself, Athal. You break it, you bought it, ya know? The windshield will be around $200: my 740 was $204 and the 850 was $227 at Kings Glass on center street right near my office. Look at Windshield Surgeons, though - about the same price, but in my experience they take better care of your car than anywhere else I've tried lately. Stay away from Glassmasters!!!

well i sure wouldn't do the front by myself, but I somehow thought that maybe the back wasn't as complicated, but it's probably just as bad as the front. feck, again.

Getting the old one out isn't bad (smash) and getting the new one in isn't TERRIBLE, but getting the trim on so that the new one STAYS in can be fiddly. Heck, getting the trim off without bending the crap out of it can be tricky too!

Better off to give the glass shop $50 to swap windows and be done with it.

That's got my vote times 1000...Greg and I did the rear window on his blue car last week and it took about 1.5 hours to figure out the trim (there's a trick - you have to carefully bend out the metal lip then it fits back in and you smash it down after)...even knowing the aforementioned trick, it still takes at least an hour. Putting it in the hole takes about 10 minutes.

First quote at $339 for the newer style rear window (which I assume fits). they don't make the 1982 version, which I assume is only with the different trim. I may call back as they said they could possibly find a used one.

Man, I should just spend $1000 on a clean, late 80s high mileage/non-runner 244 and swap everything over...why does it seem like such a waste to drop that much on a window for this car?

Yeah, for that kind of money, I wouldn't do it. Did you check into how much it would cost if you provided the window?

If you really needed to do it yourself, its not really that bad. The trim sucks, but like Craig said, you just have to bend the outside lip up slightly, with something wide (Craig used my gasket scraper), and slowly work your way around. The window itself was EASY. Some soapy water, and weed wacker line to get it started. From there, I just pryed the rubber lip in with my fingers. Easy enough.

I may take you up on that used one Dale. $339 new, vs ~$150 to install a used one...I dont even car if they don't put the trim on.

The James way of doing a 244/242 rear window/black headliner conversion (if it is a 244...242 you can get the headliner through the door with the seat folded...barely):

Removal:

Lay upside down in center of back seat. Kick with both feet in slight upper center of back window. I have no idea why they don't seem to break when I do this, but if you get it just right it just pops right out.

Install:
Peel all the trim off the rear window outer seal (I think it looks hideous compared to just slimmer profile black rubber under that metal sh*t).
Take a strong kite string and carefully tie it such that it sucks the seal lip inward while still retaining the string. Have a helper help you set the window in the cavity. Pull the string. Squish the seal to the outer edges of the opening and "pat" the glass into place with an open palm on each side. Enjoy new rear glass!

I love my 1993 back window in my 80 DL. Much less hazy from years of defrost/scratch abuse, and I gained a nice 3rd brake light and slimmer trim. I can do a back window in a 240 sedan in about 40 minutes out and back in now. It takes me a little longer if I'm forced to keep the trim.
