definitely a nice upgrade (both for looks and lighting performance), especially if the original lights on your '87 are yellowed out.

I'm pretty sure you can't beat that price for lighting upgrades either. I miss my e-codes:(

Dale's right, AFAIK. What you're looking for is the funky grille that'll go from the '81+ European ('86+ North American) front end to the early car's flathood.

However, in '86, both in euro and NA, the body lines around the cowl were changed, so the flathood and '86 body don't really line up nicely. The cowl vent in the '85 and down were depressed into the bodywork, and in the '86+ they were raised. You'll note that the homologated Gp. A cars are all based on pre-'86 chassis.

You can still put a flathood on your car, but there will be a giant step around the vent area, where the flathood is an inch lower and your car is an inch higher than the surrounding area. The fenders and non-vent part of your cowl will still match up fine with the flathood. You'll still have to find one of those really rare grilles, or make something of your own.

Personally, I'd stick with the stock hood and be happy with the E-codes.

The "86+" E-codes sold by FCP and "autolampsplus" on ebay are made by DJ-auto. The adjusters and some of the plastic on the housings is not terriffic quality and often needs a little JB weld support and intelligent reinforcement if you want them to last at all. The beam pattern and reflectors are also not as great as either the bosch or cibie made e-codes that are used on a volvo.

I'd look on german e-bay a bit before committing to buy a set of DJ autos. The OEM late cibies will also work with the head lamp leveler option if that matters to you. It is a really slick thing when it works on a late model wagon that you put a load in the back of often. I still like the DJ-autos fine fundamentally, and with availability of good OE late cibie ones and the US dollar being utter garbage (not sure about the CAD per se, but so far on my trip up here it is similarly bad to a euro), they are a good realistic choice.

Having said all this, whatever H-4 LHD e-code you stick in there, whether it be DJ-auto, Bosch or Cibie will be SO much better than your current lamps it isn't even funny. The DOT 86+ 240 and late 740/760/960 lights are so criminally awful that I think you will be hugely impressed either way.

I think a flathood on an 86+ is kind of a crazy looking thing. The cowl just seems so goofy to me and the 86+ hood really isn't horrible looking. If you use the egg crate as used on euro/aus 81-85 flathood cars (what we call a "group-A front" is pretty much just the standard 81-83 front on most all of their 240s), you kind of have to spacer it forward to have it line up with the bulge in the hood. If you do that, it really does make an 86 and newer 240 look a lot less boring. With some creativity, I'd imagine you could also gut the middle out of your late 240 grille and install egg crate guts in it from a 740T or some such.

Yeah ive got the flathood on there already, and has been on for some time. I have one of the later flathood grilles for use with the quad squares, but I dont want to hack that up at all. Ill look into the 740 option, see what i can make up. if worse comes to worse I can figure out how to step the stock grille back flush with the headlamps/hood. just a thought

Ah, 300 USD is alot for my student budget. Unfortunately pizza and beer come first. so It will have to wait for more pressing things that are in the way... eg get all the turbo ecu's, fpr/rail, in tank pump and leaking fuel tank in order before hand lol...
