How so? Not that I want it but a set of o/s pistons plus all the machining (block and head) required to do a rebuild is going to put you well north of $1000. Include the cost of a set of bearings, a full gasket set, steel timing gears, labour to assemble it and the cost of the original engine and $2000 isn't a terrible price to pay for something completely rebuilt and ready to drop in. In fact, I'd say it might be somewhat of a bargain. I'm into my B230 + 16v build for at least $1600 and haven't paid for labour to assemble it and only paid $300 for a rebuilt head...

I'd like to know where I can get an engine rebuild complete with all the parts necessary for $1000. Seriously. Maybe if you re-used pistons, rings and bearings...

Like I said, I have $1300 into parts and machining costs just to do the bottom end and I'm not paying retail prices for anything. What's a head rebuild cost when you start replacing valve seats? I'll bet a guy could spend $1000 on the head alone with a 6-banger...

Ooooo, I'd like to rock that in the Smurf. Run K-jet...get a 6-port fuel distributor. That would be cool.

Just for entertainment 50% more than I spent on my B20 (i.e. to do a B30 to the same level) would buy most of the cars on this board :( . There is a fundamental disconnect in what Dale and Paul are talking about. Dale is looking at this from a cost stand-point. Specifically, what would it cost you to do the job yourself. Paul is looking at the problem from a market perspective. What the market will bring for that particular engine.

You are both right - there is no way you could get a reasonable rebuild for that B30 for the price that it is listed at and there very little chance that someone will pay what a rebuild is worth for the B30 - so it is overpriced. There are so few cars that require that engine (note, no one here has a B30 160's only AFAIK) that unless it's going in a boat you're SOL.

I also think this is one of the reasons that there are so many crap rebuilds - no one wants to pay for the parts like heads/bearings etc.

My two-bits.
Craig

I would agree except for.....

I can't agree that Paul was talking about market value with that statement...

I think my last comment about crap rebuilds applies to the last point - any one that can do a rebuild for $1000 is either got a time machine or is more re-gasketing than rebuilding.

I'll hazard a guess and say that Paul's statements aren't related. He was asking about the claim "professional rebuild": to the average layperson, i might be "professional" enough. It might also be hogwash.

Then came the statement that this engine is worth $1000 as an unknown. I agree. Obviously if you do a thorough rebuild, new valvetrain, etc., obviously you'll spend 3-4x that. Add professional assembly and you can add a bunch more.

Meh...not worth arguing the point. Guess it just bugs me when someone pops in a statement like that without an ounce of justification...
