Ugh. Never mind. Not like this at all then by chance:
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/2650/pict40053pp.jpgThis is Jan Willem's late euro 245. They way he describes it, it probably uses the single squirrel cage blower motor in similar fashion to your description of the early car. According to him, the lower lever on the left regulates a flapper door in the heater box to let air move through the heater core or not (like a 7 series (sans the 7 series vacuum insanity) or so many other cars). That would be nice, but if one can't have nice hot heat I wouldn't be sold. I hate the vacuum buttons though, purely aesthetically. They look...american. Functionally, I have no real complaints, they are simple enough and work fine. If I make my red DL into an ITB race car the early stuff would be perfect...water could always move through the heater core, the car has a highish weight minimum, dash would be less of a PITA to take apart and the driver could have a little heat in the colder months. The 140 blower box is much like you describe...little single squirrel cage.
I recently did 2 heater cores in a couple days in 240s. (I didn't want to really...just wanted to take home $600 and it was someone who liked my work on other stuff). On one, there was a little hole in the bottom of the blower housing for where the old blower motor wiring used to live. One vintage guy who was watching me do one correctly in horror/abject amusement suggested that I plug this hole with a grommet due to it impacting heater efficiency. I started to laugh rather maniacally about wanting MORE heat in a 240. Never the less, on a 90 degree day I obliged and added said grommet and suggested he test the heater

. My 244T with water cooled turbo and a hot thermostat would start to melt the ducts a little soft in the winter lol. I will freely admit that I'm a bit of a sicko by now who can have the whole dash out, apart and back in a 240 (with the whole heater box removed) in about 6 hours. Non-A/C is easier granted.
