Well the idle roughness may indeed be coming from a misadjusted fuel distributor or a worn out control pressure regulator. Think Greg's blue car, and how much smoother it got when I richened it up a bunch. The idle INCONSISTENCY is probably another matter along the lines of your IAC valve, or a worn out throttle body perhaps.

You were having some running issues this past winter too, were you not? Might have been down to the fuel distributor as well. Have you wired up the WB02 sensor into the 122 yet? If so, next time you're up (or I'm down) we should do a tuning sesh.

Sold - I hate to admit that I've not had the wideband on the 122 - haven't done a damn thing other than work this summer. I'm taking some personal time in the fall to get to a few of these projects and would love to have a swing at tuning K-Jet. I've got a rebuilt CPR - and the rest of the performance related problems were the vac leak at the K-Jet boot. Part of me thinks it may be related to my quest to clean the engine and the subsequent gunk removal. This is how I found a few split hoses and endless acres of crud.

Well, I'm starting to get things sorted out...first up was pulling the throttle body and giving it a good clean. It was pretty gunked up dispite my attemptes to clean it while installed. It was pretty easy to clean up once off the car.

Here's the start point - not pretty...note oil, this is the intake side.

The other side - evidence that my cleaning sucked.

Pulse air thingy - not too clogged. Still required a drill bit to clean it out!

Note the screws in the background are in tight focus - my birthday passed and I got videos, but sadly no new camera!

Oil from TB left on my new facy steel bench top - naughty TB.
Image

I pulled it all apart - cleaned it up, cut new gaskets and did some gasket matching on it, gave it a light polish.

All done - other side. Installed with more TLC and the car still idles poorly. It is better, but this wasn't the problem.

Greg swung by for the first start up and there was a pretty wicked vac leak coming from somewhere. We adjusted the K-Jet boot (the front rubber bolt is broken again as the engine mounts are soft) and that seemed to quiet it down...but we both agreed that the majority of the vac leak seemed to be coming from the injectors. I've got new seals on the way - we'll get them installed soon and see how it goes.

do the old spray carb cleaner on the injectors to confirm your leaks?

I couldn't find my starting fluid - checked with propane, it was hard to hear anything over the hiss and clatter of the engine.

I've got my new gaskets and new holders (plastic thingies) - what's the secret to getting them installed correctly? I've done it once and thought it was pretty straight forward.

I use a touch of grease on everything to make it all slide nicely...

OK, I think the case is closed on this one. I just replaced the seals and plastic thingies and everything seems good. I replaced the bolts and washers (upgraded to a SAE washer that is as big as the plastic base and won't crush over time and some socket caps - they didn't have stainless :( ). I cleaned out the injector bosses really well this time, I definitely didn't get them that clean before - they were good, but not perfect. A can of carb cleaner later, each injector boss was clean as a whistle and I did off the injectors as well - can't hurt right. Then slid it all back together with the grease on the seals (I oiled them before) and it is idling better than it ever has for me. No more lumpy missing crap - no more vac leak sound.

I'm going to run it up to Calgary and back to see how it all goes.

Thanks boys.
