Autox'd the 960 last night. Ended up melting the serpentine tensioner on my 13th run and had to limp it home. Parts come in wednesday, hope I get it fixed to leave thursday.

That being said, went over the rulebook with some of the b'ys, they figure the amazon would run DSP from the asn rules because it falls under the backdating/updating regs. And a few prep points for the turbo and stuff... Should be interesting! The car has some potential!

frigging rain stopped me from doing pretty well anything actually on the car today.

pained the oil pan, and pulled apart the t5 to button up the adapter kit.

turns out the 4cyl input shaft bearing is larger than the 8cyl ones. that gives me a few options,

use the v8 bearing w/ a 2.5630"OD/1.3125"ID adapter on the input shaft
turn the new bearing retainer out by 1/16" to use the 4cyl bearing.

take the opportunity to tear down and inspect the tranny, opt for a v8 input shaft/1st gear and end up with a final box ratio of 3.35/2.34/1.46/1.00/0.79.

2 seperate machine shops wanted ~~160$ to turn me that piece. no dice there. 340$ USD + shipping for a full rebuild kit, v8 input shaft and new 1st gear.... that's a bit better!

just need to figure out what to do with the flywheel and clutch....

1st Gear 40.62 MPH
2nd Gear 58.15 MPH
3rd Gear 93.2 MPH
4th Gear 136.07 MPH
5th Gear 172.24 MPH

that's with a 6500rpm redline and a 3.55 crown vic posi rear end.

1-2 is a pretty short, but i reckon is about perfect. i just hope that i've got enough grunt in 1st.

that being said, at cruising revs (3000)

1st Gear 18.75 MPH
2nd Gear 26.84 MPH
3rd Gear 43.01 MPH
4th Gear 62.8 MPH
5th Gear 79.5 MPH

which really isn't too bad at all!

What T5 do you have?
The T5 came in an array of ratios and power handling capability.
Many of the units used in 4 cyl cars are rated at 240-265 ft/lbs torque and are know to fail regularly, you really should try to use the V8 T5

Here is some good information on the various models.

turns out i had all t-bird case ones, so i'm looooking for a v8 one right now.

pulled one of the tbird ones apart, damn are they ever easy to yank apart/work on!

Image

went looking for a rear end, couldn't find nothin, probably gonna pick up a 3.23 later style crown vic job tomorrow. (would like 3.55's) with the watts link and some ranger axles.

you can see my solution for the WG hitting the control arm bolt, now it's got a little spacer on it, so the arm just needs to be extended...

now for the big problem!

what small-case dual V groove alternators are there at the junkyard? I'm at a loss, but i'll get measuring tomorrow.

it seems as if i don't have a whole heck of a lot of room and may need to revise the motor mount setup some too...

Here is the key identification (tag number) to the T5 transmissions ... it may help.

sweet, picked up a 3.73 explorer rear end now too for 2 hundy.

looks like i'll have to spend another 600$ on custom axles/setup kit/studs though :S well, there goes the tuition saved!

It also appears as though between all the transmissions i have, i don't have a gearset that works together. damn. no big deal though i guess, time for a custom gearset.

i'm looking at around another 600$ for a gearset/rebuild kit, and then another 400-500 or so for a clutch/flywheel/pp i'd guess. Damn, someone should have warned me this stuff wasn't cheap. lol.

and now i'm looking at options to build an intake.

is there anything wrong with a sheet metal steel intake versus aluminum? I mean, aside from the weight and heat-soak?

From what I understand these are the best gearsets available for the T5

Yeah, its looking more like a set of the 2.95 z code ones (350usd) and a rebuild kit (220usd) unless I can find somethin used.

Kk, just shy of 700 shipped for the gearset this morning. Narrowing kit just arrived to the dismay of my mother (whhat is this big heavy box!). Still trying to get ahold of rsi for a flywheel. I may just use thE dog dish one and run MS though, but that bumps my autox class.

This weekend I will probably fit up the rear end, build the tranny xmember and measure up my driveshaft. This could be interesting to fit since it seems the center bearing area is structural.

You will love the T5Z 2.95 gearset, that is what I have and they are awesome.
$700 is not too bad a price, my T5Z trany (new) was $1700 so you saved a grand. nice work

Sorry to hear that didnt work out for you....How bad was that T5? did you disassemble it? $700 us for new internals! Geez.. WMS still lists the T5Z(tremec hd, 335ftlb,2.95) at about $1350ish can.....your half the way to a new one.

haha, you did quite the damage! It's impressive, stripped about 70% of the teeth off 3'rd on both shafts, and chipped most of the teeth on second on the mainshaft! But! the case is pristine and the shift forks are good (Whereas the other two trannys i have both have some hairline cracks in them, so i'm still getting useable parts!

that being said, it's a heck of a deal for gears/rebuild kit!

and now i've got my choice of overdrives! so in the end, i'll have a close-ratio gear box, and a bulletproof rear end....

all i need now is to find a way to use the b21 to put some real power to the ground without adding any extra $$$ to the budget! i do have some h-beams and a 16v head kicking around though, and can get a rebuilt block with some brand new .030 mahle pistons for 1k whenever i'd like though.... maybe that's an option for later on...

Image

Look what came in the mail today!!!

and it's got all the pucks to do 8/8.8/9"/some chev/dana rear ends!

i'm frigging stoked! gonna cut down the housing for sure to fit the cobra rims in the stock wheel wells, measure out the axles and get them ordered! Then do the driveshaft!

If i get a move on wiring/running hardlines for fuel there's a marginal chance i could have this thing running by the august 15 autocross.... ordered a lightened flat flywheel today, gonna try to get the tone ring from the auto flex plate added to it (It's just ground down on the outside up to a small amount around the bolt holes, 18lbs) at the machine shop, otherwise megasquirt it is.

still need to find a clutch/pp, i think i've got a spare pp, but i fear it may be for a dished flywheel.... ah well... should be able to get something.... and find a clutch too.

Thanks again for the parts tranny Frepea!

i guess i should fit up the wheels on the front too and see what i need for spacers. I reckon the increase in scrub might be a good thing to lighten up the steering

brakes are going to have to wait for a few weeks. i'd like to run similar wilwoods front and back, so i've been looking to pickup one of those little sieg x2/x3 machines. order some standard parts and make something up. i don't imagine it'd be terribly difficult so long as i sized everything right.

I'm worried about the steering idler arm hitting the alt mount at full throttle/full lock, so i may actually lift the engine a half inch if it looks like clearance will be an issue. all details for a bit later though!

wow, what a long post.

Image

edit, found another pic of the drivers side of the motor.

Edit Edit: Dangit! stuck working this weekend up here! Ah well, there's another bunch of parts for the car at 2x normal rate

well, since i'm stuck here all weekend, here's the latest benchracing....

would a b230 manifold line up with itself cut off and flipped around an inch or so past the fuel injector bungs? that might be a solution!
