That is a municipal code. Contact the city of Edmonton and see what they allow. The permits and inspection division has this information free of charge (in my experience).

you are right craig, turns out it's pretty standard, requires a fireproof backerboard with an air-gap. Class A chimney and a proper attic box.

I'm going to try and build my waste oil heater first, but if it fails miserably or is too fickle, i'll consider dropping in a wood stove!
