Open up the gates to Hell ...but I've got to paint my engine bay and do a few touch-ups on the Canuck this spring/summer. I'm replacing the inner fenders and hope to get everything looking spiffy for my new engine. If the tax man is good to me this year, I'll finally have enough air to power my spray gun and be away to the races.

Here's the problem. I haven't squirted a car in about 10 years and chemistry has marched on. I'm looking only at 2 part catalized enamels (used them before with good results), but I what brand? What is the difference? Who's had experience with the new stuff. What about the water-based paints? As I'm doing under hood/touch up's I don't want a base/clear combination. The only other issue is finding someone that can cross reference colour 79-1 (Pearl White) from 1966.

Thoughts.

I don't have alot of experience spraying cars, and I've only used Dupont products for the finish coats so I can't be too much help. I've sprayed catalyzed acrylic mostly, but my first car I sprayed with urethane and I liked that very much. Urethane is supposed to be much longer lasting and give a higher shine than acrylic, so the next time I paint a car to be pretty I'll probably try that stuff again.

My problem is that I hate bodywork so much I know that I'll never get it smooth enough to make anything pretty, and then when you've got something pretty you're always worried about parking lot dings, key scratches (unintentional and otherwise), matching for repair, etc. Pragmatically, an ugly car makes much more sense, but that's not what you're asking, is it?

My local paint supplier only deals in PPG - so at this point I'm going with their PPG Concept line of paints. I'm going to have to rig up a fresh air system to go with this as everything I've read about the chemicals leads me to believe that they are dangerous (can't believe how often you see guys on TV, magazines etc, spraying this crap with an organic filter mask). I'll be posting some shots when I get it done in a couple of months.

I've always thought of prep as being like meditation - not agrivation.

State of mind...or mindlessness, you decide.
