The rod is broken I know that, I pulled the shifter and half the linkage came with it, i'm not sure of how the linkage fits together. Looking at the rod it looks like there is a bend in it, a factory bend and right where the rod is compressed a bit is where it broke.

Look at the pictures in this thread: http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/forum/v ... 8&start=15

That's a plan view (from the top) of the linkage. At the far right you'll see a ball, and through that ball (from top of page to bottom of page) is a hole. That hole is used by the coupler sleeve to connect this rod to the one in the transmission.

The coupler sleeve is held together by a band of spring steel which is a bit of a PITA to get at with the tranny still in place, and this band of spring steel retains the two pins that connect the coupler to each rod. Push back that band, push out the pin, and the rest of your shifter linkage rod should come out.

I've got a parts transmission that you can come over & grab the linkage rod from, and see how that coupler works. I bent the rod to clear the overdrive unit when I installed a super-short-throw shifter, but it can be bent back without trouble. We could also do a short throw shifter while we're at it...

Oh yeah! Good times! Craig and I did this just the other day.
You should be able to do this no problem Andy. Support the tranny, drop the crossmember, and lower the tranny as far down as you can to get some more hand room. From there, you can rotate the coupler sleeve Matt is describing to expose the back pin. Spread the sleeve apart with a flat head or something, and push it towards the front of the car about a centimetre....then push the pin out. Getting it back in was tougher. I ended up just prying a little on the bar from inside the cab, pushing it toward the front of the car with a pry bar. From there the pin popped in easy for Craig. It just needs a little push forward to help line up the holes. Looking at Matt's spare will help you figure out what you need to do.

Glad to hear its fixed. So the shifter broke at the bend? Was it rusty or something?

Do you have everything you need now Andy?

I've been taking a break from the car thing/forums for awhile so havn't been reading as much.

Still have the parts car kicking around.. and my 242 beater has been totalled off. I am buying it back for $200... I might just get it saftied again but at this point, not sure. So I might have more parts.

Hopefully this string of bad luck ends.. you gotta be at PACNW!

I gave you two packs of popcorn for that fair and square, and then they sucked at popping.

I believe I have everything I need, it falls on it's face above 5k, sputtering and everything. I still have thoughts of a dying coil.

Sputtering, as in slam your chin on the steering wheel?

That's what my wagon did. A better ignition module and different coil fixed it so I couldn't tell you if it was the coil for sure, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot...

I've got a couple coils to try, I just have to grab a bit of metal and make a new bracket because I cut out the old one for the new coil.

Clean your contacts! Took the ignition control module off too check it out for anything suspicious and it seems fine, so I cleaned the ground plate all up and she's running fine except for the no boost thing.

Sorry, Andy - by IC I meant Intercooler, not Ignition Coil.

Thats ok, stuttering is fixed (for now). I'll see when boost comes back how everything is holding.
