wow, im having serious problems with the GT, i just replaced the turbo as i posted before with a 60trim t3. I replaced the oil feed line and cleaned out the drain pipe.

Today i got her running again with the CFI's and took her twice around the block, each time never hitting boost. Then i go to pull the car into the garage, and blue smoke....lots of it. Now during idle the car smokes like you wouldnt believe.

I am seriously lost here, i even primed up the turbo as per chiltons manual (6, 10 second cranks w/o spark) and double checked my work several times.

The car may be comming up for sale if i cannot source the problem, i seem to have had nothing but problems since the rebuild and im tired of being without a vehicle for months on end.

I know im a hipocrite(see andy's thread) but blue smoke just turns my stomach.

The only things i can think of are that either its not the turbo or the oil is not draining properly. but as i said if i cant fix the problem i might just be getting rid of the car

yea i know :D , I am going to try changing the oil tommorrow and see what happens, i did have a spark problem for a couple days after the turbo was swapped and i could not get the car started after several attempts/killing the battery a few times, maybe the oil is contaminated with gas?? i dont know im fishing for answers here.

is that a possible cause?

Not draining, or a seal in the turbo (was it new or used? Did you have it apart?)

If you just put the turbo on, I'd personally start looking around there for the cause. Unless your PCV decided to plug up all of a sudden?

i changed the oil today didnt make much of a difference, but after a bit i noticed the smoke looked almost white, like a headgasket.

the turbo was brand new, i loosened the housings a bit to re-clock the cartridge but never actually had it apart. and i took extra care to retorque it properly.

The car smokes constantly wether at idle or accel/decel(did one quick run up my alley).

From cold, does your coolant tank build pressure almost instantly?

no i dont think so, ill try it tonight.

I posted my dillema on brickboard and one guy responded saying he had the same problem when he put his rebuilt turbo on and it cleared up after a few miles on the road.

I might take her out for a spin tonight see what happens, the oil isnt going black at all and the coolant looks normal so i dont think it would hurt but who knows

It sucks cuz the turbo was apparently freshly rebuilt, it had zero shaft play and not a speck of oil anywhere on it,(and bought from a reputable(i think) source from Turbobricks).

The oil wouldn't go black anyways. Only diesels do that...

If the headgasket is blown you'll either have oil that looks like a chocolate milkshake or coolant that has a nice brown scum on it...

A plugged air filter will make the turbo pull air from the crank case, but not generally at idle. How's the air filter?

looks like ive determined that the turbo is bad, i replaced the crankcase ventilation and fixed a vacuum leak, then took the car out for a spin.

I took her around the blocks a few times, then eased on the gas and got the turbo to spool, it sounded horrible. Parked the car pulled off the intake side and checked the turbo shaft and it felt as if the thing had come loose. it spun freely but moved up and down super easy. Looks like im in the market for another turbo.

Just out of curiousity does anyone have any ideas why this may have happend, does it sound like it didnt get enough oil or something like that???

upon furthur inspection that horrid sound i heard when the turbo spooled i believe was from the compressor wheel contacting the housing, you can see the scuff lines and marks on the blades from where it contacted.

either i screwed up royaly on the install or this was a ghetto rebuild.

Is there oil in the turbo? As in, in the bearing? Sounds like you may have run it dry. Or, the rebuild was crap...

I've got my engine out of my car and the turbo is hanging off the manifold. If you want one to use so your car is running, come and get it. It's in great shape. Matt rebuilt it a couple of years ago. Once you get the one you want, you can give it back...

yea running it dry is i major possibility, although the feed line is new, the drain line has been cleaned and i primed the turbo prior to starting the car so i can't see why it would not have sufficient lubrication.

if i do have a lubrication problem id rather not run your turbo as i definately dont want to screw it up. Im going to reinstall my old turbo and see what happens. Sucks that i wasted so much time, the 60 trim wasnt very expensive so im not to pissed about the money just that i put so much time into it.
