As most of you know I plan to convert the 940T over from an auto (gawd I hate it !) to a manual gearbox. I have a M46 that I could use but it came from a 240 so I would need a remote from a 700/900 series to make it work. Anybody happen to have one of those that they don't need anymore ?

One question though. The bellhousing on the M46 I have is pre- 86 or whatever the cutoff is so it doesn't have the boss for the LH 2.4 crank position sensor. The bellhousing Trev used for his conversion was a later version with the boss for the sensor so it was easy to see where to grind out the hole needed for the sensor to go through.

Is it possible to grind out an opening for the CPS on any earlier type bellhousing that doesn't have any provision for a CPS opening ? Is it relatively easy to locate and mark the spot ? I was thinking that it could be done by putting the bellhousing from the automatic along side the M46 bellhousing, measuring carefully then marking the where the hole should be located and grinding it out. Or I suppose I could bolt the bellhousing onto the block and mark out exactly where the CPS is supposed to go.

The metal will be a little thicker than it would be on a bellhousing that has provision for the CPS hole but that's no big deal. Aluminum is easy to grind out. Does that sound feasible ? How accurately does the CPS hole have to be placed ?

Thanks,

Roj

P.S. Does anyone have a flat B21/23 flywheel they can let go of cheap ? Is there a difference between a B21/23 flywheel and a B18/B20 flywheel ? I have a spare B18 flywheel here that I could use if I they're the same.

Read my thread about the machine shop I found that could make a flat B21/23 flywheel LH 2.4 compatible:

B18 flywheel will most likely be a 6 bolt, b21/23 flat flywheel will be an 8 bolt flywheel so you can't use it. The crank position sensor has to be placed in a relatively exact position with a pretty precise gap from the flywheel. It does not emit much power so if it is too far then it won't see a change in signal from the flywheel holes. That being said as well, make sure your machinest matches the original hole depth from a 2.4 flywheel.

You could hog out the hole on the bellhousing, you can see in the old castings where the hole should go. drill hole, drill and tap a mounting hole and away you go if see fit. Or check the junkyard and find a late 80s manual volvo and take the bellhousing.

Are you going to be going with a hydraulic or cable clutch? the clutch fork is different depending on what way you go, same with the pedal assembly. Speaking of which you need the pedal assembly from a 7 series and late model ones will be hydraulic, early ones will be cable. If you go hydraulic then you need the mast and slave cylinder for the hydraulics. Looking as Vik's example, hydraulic ones are a bit of a fuss to set up initally but once they are then you don't have to mess with them as long as the cylinders are in good shape with no leaks in the lines. Cable ones are incredibly simple to set up but I have found that the clutch cables that you can get for them nowadays suck monkey nuts. Personally I have to adjust my clutch cable every couple weeks and I know of a couple older cars that have come back to the shop because of this too so we swap the cable out again. The cables are really hit and miss, some work amazing, some do what mine does and come out of adjustment constantly.

Have fun with it.

there is a reason everyone went to hydraulic, its much better. IMO its not that much more work setting it up i would much rather take the time to put in hydraulic then mess with a cable. Cables can work but they are finicky and wear out and you have to adjust them.

Everything swaps over. I had a 240 M46 in my 740 and just put it back in my 240.

Hydro clutch swaps in either bellhousing. I just took a hacksaw and sliced out a rectangle in the bellhousing at the top. It isn't a very structural place there. Just have at it.

I HATE HATE the cable clutch in my 240. It is getting the 260 hydraulic junk ASAP as soon as I have time. I currently drive a getrag 940 as my daily POS since M46s proved fragile.
