Matt made my car awesome, Matt is a god.

I have stock wastegate stock spring, non-torn diagphragm etc.

No boost controller..

Anywho, I see ~10psi in most gears, but when I really give her juice in 4th, around 3800 she goes up to about 15psi and then settles back down to 13.5 or so.

what gives? I love the boost, but I'd like it in every gear...

It seems to only happen if I have "long enough" to build the boost.

Oh, and matt is a god and I owe him my first born! :D

Good to hear it is running right, and that it wasn't a temporary thing. I really think it was the coil swap you made, but unless you swap the other one back in for a minute or two, we'll never know. I got so lost with the MAF adjustments I was doing, I don't know how far away it was originally. The narrowband O2 sensor is certainly lazy, so it might be a good idea to switch that signal over to your wideband until you install MS, if you do. I'd run the ECU from a narrowband, if you were going to stick with LH for any length of time (like the winter)

I never did ask, but that vibration you used to have was the shifter hitting that rubber guibo (driveshaft), yeah?

In any event, the first thing I can think of is a torn diaphragm. You don't really know that it isn't, right? Hopefully it doesn't get worse and worse before you find a new one to try.

The next idea is that you've got a sticky wastegate and it's not fully opening. You might get it moving again with some lube, but it'll burn off so fast that it might not stay working. Then again, with it running so crappy in boost and with you staying out of boost as much as you have, I suppose it could be a bit rusty and will loosen up as you drive it.

It could also be the open exhaust and IPD turbo cam passing too much air for that wee turbo's wastegate to handle.

As far as the gear thing, all turbos try to boost harder when the engine is under the heaviest load. In the lower gears, the engine is accelerating away from the turbo and the turbo's got to spool so fast to keep up.

Pretty sure I'm going to tap into the much more lively 0-1v output of my WB, for the LH, yea.. LH is staying in over winter :)

The wastegate seems to be happy, it _could_ be a torn diaphragm, but wouldn't it spike in the lower load gears too?

Its working great, absolutely a riot to drive now, My volvo is back! You should see the smile on my face :D

Oh, and I understand that the turbo will spool faster and better under much higher load, like 3rd and 4th gear. (man I need the overdrive back! :D) she tops out at 184 km/h on the GPS at fuel cut/spark cut @ 6100 ish rpm. :-)

anyways, i love my volvo now :D but holy balls does it pull amazingly smooth when it gets up to 13-14psi in 4th, its just so smoooth!!!!

So by helping you get your car running right... is that aiding and abetting? :(

To see if it's torn, you can get a really cheap bicycle pump from Crappy Tire, and make sure it's got a toy inflator nozzle. Get a bit of hose and a vacuum tee, and get a pressure gauge - doesn't have to be graduated so it could just be a crappy 240 turbo gauge if that's what you've got, but you can get a "fuel pump/vacuum gauge" from Crappy Tire too for cheap, and it's good to 10 psi or so. Gauge on one end of the tee, pump on another, wastegate on the third. Give the WG a bit of pressure and watch it move, and make sure it doesn't lose pressure too quickly. You can also verify full and smooth wastegate action with this tool.

naw if fixing cars was aiding and abetting, there wouldn't be any mechanics left, they;'d all be in jail.
