Not the political one, but I am seriously considering adding Catalytic Converters to my car :? .
This will require two cat's with 2.5" inlets and outlets, any recommondations on where to buy or types?

I am keeping an eye on Ebay (may get them shipped to James and pick them up with the wheels as an idea)

Cats on a carbd car? You crazy.

Remember the RX-7...

Edit - seriously, how many miles do you put on that thing, and how many emissions do you think you'd cut out with cats?

Cats only work in a narrow range of AFRs, so I completely second what Matt said. The RX-7 is a little unfair since it burns oil by design and emits extremely hot exhaust, but on the other hand, your utterly non-emissions friendly carbs and head ought to be similar.

Long ago, when two good friends of mine worked at IPD, they tested cats for flow when looking for ones that would outflow the late model volvo stainless steel cored circular type cats. None of the ceramic aftermarket ones did, and at the time, SS core with very thin SS was rare and only made by a couple companies. Now, more people make an SS core high flow cat with a larger substrate. Still, if you get the pleasure of taking apart a cat from a late P1 or any P2 volvo, you can see just how huge the OE cores are.

I'd do EFI and think of other things to do to your car that you only drive in the summer first. Cats go out more frequently in cold weather cars that have more start/stop cycles with less than optimal AFRs is what I have noticed for a pattern.

The cat in my 92 245 was original with 335K on it and passed emissions fine and wasn't plugged. The same is true of my red '80, which still passes very easily. Both were/are southern oregon/california cars. Mom's 1-owner wisconsin car with 125K has needed a cat from short trips and some cold running. It has never run badly for any extended period either.

 Oh I should have explained further. I don't give a S**t about the emissions. I want to add cats to reduce the exhaust smell, kind of permeates everything (wife complaining).

Keep the feedback coming, I am thinking out loud more than anything.
By the way the car is running awesome, carb is now 90% dialed in

Oh c'mon dad, keep the air clean for your kids!
I'm running a magnaflow cat, and I think my dyno sheet shows it's not much of a restriction! Got it through Richard Thomas when he was still around, not sure who his supplier was, but it was around $75. Check with mopac and I can check if worldpac carries anything appropriate.

Uh, Ian... did you ever smell my car? I had the Magnaflow cats, and that's ALL you could smell! Maybe I wasn't burning rich enough during startup or something, or maybe too rich, but until they fully lit off, it was terrible. I was really tempted to pull them off because of the stink.

Good point Matt
I know cat's don't work until HOT and cold cat's can smell more than the crap that is going though them.

This is exactly the discussion I was looking for, no good solution which means I leave it as is .... YAY, less work :D

Yeah, and I think the quality of the Magnaflow cats' substrate leaves a little something to be desired, or maybe it was the fuel I was running, or something. Roberta's car makes a puff or two of "cold cat stink" (kind of like "bitter beer face) when you first fire it up, but it doesn't even smell as bad as my V8 did at the best of times. Probably has something to do with the overlap in my cam, or something.

Come to think of it, though - my cats were NOT Magnaflow, exactly. They were another brand, but I'm unsure if they were owned by the same company as Magnaflow or not. I can't remember the brand name. I also forget if Athal has a "Magnaflow" cat in his 242 or if it was another brand - I don't remember seeing the Magnaflow script anywhere either time I dealt with that exhaust, but I also don't think his car stinks as badly as mine did.

So there ya go, I may have saved you some energy & money, even if I'm not saving the planet.

Edit again - you can always run race fuel in your car... that stuff is like car guy perfume!

Or you could try this: http://www.liquidhorsepower.com/fuel-fragrances.php

You guys can come sniff my tailpipe anytime:P

I'm not sure if there's writing on mine either Matt, but I'm pretty sure it came in a magnaflow box. And I haven't really noticed much stink either, but then that car is only in the garage when something needs to be fixed so I don't get much exposure to start up smells.

Regardless, I at least FEEL like I'm being a good tree hugger while I'm revving the snot out of my car for no reason.

Does E85 smell any better? It must be different, too bad we don't get it here, be fun to try that much octane anyway.
